The state-run Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuco) has recorded its first fatal accident for this year with the electrocution of an electrician at the Skeldon Sugar Factory, a senior official said Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as 23-year old Ulric Leonard Johnson.

GuySuco’s Director of Industrial Relations, Jairam Pitam told Demerara Waves Online News said the incident occurred while the man was conducting repairs. “They were doing some maintenance work on the cane preparation breaker. The breaker was switched off but somehow he put his hand and the wire was live,” he said.

The incident occurred Saturday morning about 10 O’ clock.  Pitam said two other men were working in the area at the time but only Johnson was fatally shocked.

Pitam said that for 2013 Guysuco recorded two fatal accidents and 1,272 industrial accidents that resulted in workers having been incapacitated  for some time, more often about three days.
