I think you need to read what he said again...they did not learn to be warlike from the QUran...they perhaps found passages that they liked...these religious books were written in warlike times

The Qur'an says to "fight with those who fight with you but do not commit aggression because Allah does not like aggressors. That is not warlike. It is setting the standard for defending oneself from aggressors.
