A ROLLING pin (belna) is said to be the murder weapon and anger at an unwelcome “feel up” (fondling) surfaced as a possible motive for the murder of a 62-year-old landlord on Monday night, as police took a woman and her two children into custody. Police said that at about 20:30 hrs on May 27, 2013, the body of Azaad Ganie of Sideline Dam, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, was found in his home with injuries to his head.
The woman, along with her son and daughter, who resided on the lower flat of the building, were arrested and are in police custody. The woman reportedly told the police that the landlord was in the habit of “fondling” her whenever she goes up to the upper flat of the house to take his meals, and she became angry when he began to ‘feel her up’ on Monday and repeatedly dealt him several blows to his head with a rolling pin she was carrying. The man’s son, Azaad (only name given) told the Guyana Chronicle that he received a telephone call in which the caller told him that his father was murdered on Monday night and he journeyed to the location.
He stated that by then the bloodied body of his father was already removed from the upper flat of the two-storeyed wooden building and after the police had conducted their investigations, they cleaned up the blood that was in the living room. Azaad explained that his father lived alone in the top flat of his house and maintained his kitchen garden regularly since he was active and healthy. It was only yesterday morning that he identified the body at Ezekiel Funeral Home. At the landlord’s home yesterday, several relatives gathered, including Ganie’s siblings, who were visibly upset. Neighbours who were also present said that they are of the opinion that the man was killed for his property and the woman alone did not carry out the crime as they believe that she had some help from an accomplice. Meanwhile, the husband of the suspect, Mohamed Rasheed, who was in the process of removing his furniture and household items from the lower flat he occupied with his family of six, said that he was at work when the incident occurred.
Rasheed said that when he returned home, he urged his wife to turn herself over to the police after she reportedly told him what she did. He said that his wife, her son, daughter and two grandchildren moved into the home about three months ago after he was invited to rent the place. However, he stated that during their stay there, his wife never reported any problems and so he was surprised at the incident. According to the police, they visited the crime scene after a neighbour telephoned them to report that they heard Ganie shouting for “neighbour” repeatedly, and did not see him afterwards. It was then they stumbled upon his body and arrested the woman, her 16-year-old son, and her 20-year-old daughter. Neighbours yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that they heard Ganie yelling at about 14:00 hrs but did not go over and they became worried after they did not see him after that. Ganie was the father of two and he had eight brothers and sisters. |
