The Guyana Fire Service and the Joint Services have responded to reports of unrest at the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara Monday evening.
From a Facebook Live video of a journalist, several shots were heard in the background and several inmates are said to be injured.
Commissioner of Police, Leslie James and other senior officials are at the scene as the cause and nature of the unrest is yet to be determined.
The unrest is occurring hours after three inmates escaped from the facility.
The police hunt continues. News Room will provide more information as it becomes available.
