There is something seriously wrong with some of the people in Guyana. Kari you are right(I admit) they do need some counselling. I will not go as far to say that the Govt is at fault. But I will say that the Administration  need to look into these matters carefully and see what common denominator these families have in common.

yes, it's time to go beyond "talking" about the issues like suicide and domestic violence. There are many NGOs in Guyana that get lots of donor funds, but they focus on talk and talk and like to see and hear themselves. Awareness programs are great as a first phase but in Guyana many NGOs are stuck in that phase. It is high time that the Government, NGOs and all stakeholders move beyond the talk and get into effective counseling, establishing safe houses and give effective legal assistance. All of the relevant systems/entities that should necessarily be involved need to be revamped. That said, kudos to Help and Shelter, SASOD, Legal Aid and Red Thread for going way beyond the talk and  for tangibly helping victims.

Actually, I have to correct myself - the Guyana based NGOs are the ones that tend to go beyond the talk. It is really the NGOs that are based outside of Guyana (and that are funded by well meaning often foreign based donors) that ostensibly aim to help Guyanese that are the ones stuck in the "talking" mode/phase.
