Battered woman comes forward to protect attacker

April 19, 2012 | By | Filed Under News

…hopes to clear boyfriend’s name
Although still exhibiting signs of a severely battered woman, Eureka Garraway yesterday

Eureka Garraway

insisted that reports of a recent attack she suffered at the hands of her boyfriend have been grossly misrepresented in the media.

She is pointing fingers at one of her relatives, claiming that the individual exaggerated the truth.

Reports published extensively by this newspaper and other sections of the media earlier this month revealed that the 38-year-old woman was severely beaten with a hammer by her boyfriend, Joseph Taylor.

Reports are that relatives found her in an unconscious state in a relative’s Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara home.  It is alleged that in addition to being beaten with a hammer about her head by the perpetrator, he also inflicted wounds with a knife.

Garraway was rushed to St Joseph Mercy Hospital where she remained a patient for four days during which time she was disoriented and appeared to have been suffering from memory loss, one relative said.

Police subsequently issued a wanted bulletin for Taylor who is said to be a vendor and has had associations with the local and regional sports fraternity.
In fact, in 2009 he was given a special award for his contribution to the off-the-field entertainment, compliments of the Guyana Cricket Board when it held its annual Awards Ceremony.

Yesterday, Garraway said that her intention was to testify to the fact that the man is not guilty of doing what was portrayed in the media. “I want to clear him out of this problem…because, to be honest, is 12 years I living with he and he never put a hand on me.” While admitting that she was attacked by the man on the day in question, Garraway said that it certainly was not with a hammer. She said that she suffered no broken fingers as was reported by one of her relatives.

Recounting her version of the incident, Garraway said that she had upbraided Joseph about drinking too much which may have triggered his reaction to push her, causing her to slam into a refrigerator and fall.

She further claimed that because of the fact that she has malaria it may have contributed to the fall since according to her “my body li’l shaky still.”
She claimed, too, that unlike the details of the article she was never unconscious at any point.

She recalled that the man had armed himself with a knife after she threatened to throw some hot rice on him because of his evident drunken state.

Prior to the assault, the woman, who said that she is currently staying with a sister in Sophia, Georgetown, said that she was a cook in the North West District. She is currently incapable of working. “When I feel better I will go back to work.”

She was insistent that no one forced her to clear her boyfriend’s name. Garraway said that it was only a few days ago that she became aware of what was published in the media.

“Is one of me nieces tell me how a set of things get published in the newspaper and so I decide to come and clear up the situation.”
Her appearance at Kaieteur News came after the police issued a wanted bulletin. According to the bulletin the man is wanted for questioning in relation to the attempted murder of Garraway on April 4, last.

It also notes that anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Taylor should contact the police on telephone numbers: 229-2557, 229-2702, 226-1326, 225-8196, 225-6411, 911 or the nearest police station.

For his part, Taylor had said that he would turn himself in to the police when the woman was discharged from hospital. However, he is yet to do so.

What she may know that we don't  is irrelevant. That someone took a hammer to her head and she was by hospital accounting near deaths door is what matters.

We have laws on the books and have been campaigning against the abuse of women and she happens to fit the description of an abused woman. Take the man before the court and use her as a witness.

On the stand, on forewarning of her legal jeopardy for perjury, ask her who  hit her causing the injury she has. That is all that matters.

It IS his business as well as the business of every member of society to speak out on behalf of battered , vulnerable women in our society . Abuse of women can be physical , emotional or sexual . Guyanese need to speak up against these injustices . All that is needed for injustice to occur is for good men and women to say and do nothing .

Just FYI , yesterday in the US , many men literally walked in women's shoes to show solidarity with women who have been abused .

With a nod to the saying, "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes, " men sport high heels in 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' events to bring attention to sexual violence against women.  According to the Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey, an average of 207,754 cases, or one victim every two minutes, of rape and sexual assault were reported between 2006-2010.

There are certain prerequisites to being a member of civil society and once those are being trampled on the right of every individual is to seek redress.

Here we have an uncouth, brutish individual and a stupid woman acting in ways that makes little sense except to similarly culturally backward others. Unfortunately, for  you or her; your business happens to be contrary to the conditions required for sustaining a good quality of social life so correcting your ignorance happens to be my business.

Alas, these very conditions which demands intervention in  this instance  acts against any willingness or urgings  to  incarcerate you  pitiful social misfits in a Zoo according to your manifested animal instincts.

It would be negligent to let the farmyard animals have their way or degenerate brutes determine  civic order in a society.

All I am saying is you are a little bit confused as to who is a Guyanese, who are obliged to speak to social issues and maybe that all stems from a misunderstanding as to what are rights and how these are conserved under the law.

From your profile and your writing above you are apparently confused as to your gender. But be you a man or a woman or otherwise it has little relevance to the matter above.

A man takes a hammer to a woman and left her close to being dead and she would have been so with out medical intervention. As she has no right to take her own life similarly she has no right to say who is obliged to be forgiven for beating her. That is the states right. The state need to enforce that here with prejudice because this stupid woman will inevitably meet her death at his hands.

He , given his disposition and disregard for other humans, is an ever present danger to others. Lacking an understanding by him that there are social limits to ones aggression beyond which one pays, he will re-offend. Further, the person most likely to feel the brutish side of this troglodyte again is this stupid woman defending him. She needs an intervention and since no one apparently has afforded her the help the state has an obligation here.
