VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The province is apologizing to the family of a man who took his own life after being fired as a co-op student for the Ministry of Health.

After several data breaches, a number of employees were let go, including Roderick MacIsaac. But it has now been found some of the firings were unwarranted or considered excessive.

“We welcome the BC governments apology to Roderick’s family, we’re very happy about that,” says Stephanie Smith with the BCGEU.

But the man’s family demanded the apology a few days ago.

Minister Terry Lake says he’s asked the deputy minister to send a letter to MacIsaac’s family, expressing sympathy and condolences for the stress and sadness they have endured as a result of his death in December, 2012.

A review will also look into the steps government takes to investigate accusations of inappropriate misconduct. The report is due at the end of this month.

“We expect to cooperate full with that review…and we’re hopeful that some of the outstanding questions around which level of government was responsible for what happened, will be answered,” adds Smith.
