GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday March 2, 2012 – Heavy rainfall since Monday has resulted in a disruption of business as usual in Guyana.

And the country is now under flood watch as businesses and schools were forced to close their doors due to rising water levels. Fallen trees, overflowed canals, stalled vehicles and garbage floating in the waterways were among the contributing factors to children being dismissed from school early, as the rains which started on Monday continued to fall.

And, while some businesses were forced to close their doors due to the weather, those that remained opened said sales were slower than usual.

However, many blamed improper garbage disposal as the major cause of the flooding. One official from the Georgetown Mayor and City Council confirmed that the garbage problem was a major contributing factor to the flooding which was creating the problem.

Meanwhile, government has given the assurance that it is monitoring the situation closely to ensure that systems in place to mitigate the impact of the floodwaters were working.

And it will continue to be the same story, PB. Even though we may want to blame every tom dick and harry for the floods, the citizens needs to do their part as well. Styrofoam cups, plates and everything else are being dumped in canals and trenches with little regard.
