Help on US cellphone contracts needed

I need to get a US cellphone contract for one year. But since I am in the UK I have absolutely no clue how you guys in the US go about getting a phone contract, and which one is good. I'll need it for the West Coast.

Any advice that you can offer me?

One alternative: Walk with an unlocked cell phone to the US. Buy a SIM card on the West Coast. Buy air time credit as necessary.

Lots of no contract vendors. Actually, that is the way the industry is moving.

In any event, no company in the us offer one year contracts. The contracts are for the cost of the phone so you can buy the phone completely and simply pay the monthly rates for the plan of your choosing.
