Government on Thursday said there has been no movement on the future of Police Commissioner, Henry Greene’s tenure.
Government has been coming under intense pressure for the top cop to be fired or asked to resign because he had admitted having consensual sex with a woman who is the subject of a police probe into extortion.
The woman had eventually accused him of raping her but the High Court quashed existing advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions for him to be charged with rape. Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon told reporters that government was still examining the ethical matters concerning Greene’s action.
Luncheon says no decision has been taken to ask Greene to resign or have him dismissed. He noted that the legal matter has possibly not been concluded. The political opposition and non-governmental organisations including Red Thread and the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers have all been demanding that Greene vacate the post of Police Commissioner.
Assistant Police Commissioner, Leroy Brummel has been acting Police Commissioner ever since Greene went on leave late last year to facilitate a probe including one conduced jointly by Guyanese and Jamaican police.
Sources in the Attorney General’s Chambers have told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com  that State Counsels are still studying Chief Justice Ian Chang’s scrapping of the DPP’s advice against Greene. |
