Thousands gathered in South Richmond Hill Saturday to celebrate one of the largest parades in the world marking the Hindu feast of Phagwah, the “Festival of Colors,” which heralds winter’s transition into spring.

Revelers from Canada to the Caribbean came to Queens just to take part in the festival and parade, which began at Liberty Avenue and 133rd Street and ended at Smokey Oval Park on Atlantic Avenue.

The 25th Annual Phagwah Parade took place on Saturday, March 30 in Richmond Hill.

The streets of Richmond Hill were colored red, green and purple as the West Indian community celebrated Holi, a significant Hindu holiday that welcomes spring. Also known as Phagwah, the 25th Annual Parade took place on Saturday, March 30.

Residents lined up along Liberty Avenue to see the variety of floats and the colored powder filling the air.  The parade made its way towards Phil “Scooter” Rizzuto Park, where everyone gathered for a cultural show that included singing and dancing. The celebrations welcomed everyone from different races, religions, and ages to have fun and become one in the colors.

“It’s lots of fun for the kids; they enjoy it,” Rajmatee Ramdhanie, mother of three, said.

For Sarika Persaud, celebrating Holi is also a way to make herself a better person.

“It means letting go of tendencies and opening myself up to compassion and being one with other people,” she said.

The Colors of Holi

This weekend Hindus in New York City will celebrate Holi, a holiday that celebrates the arrival of spring. Known as the festival of colors, a major part of the celebration involves colored powder smeared on the body, as well as the spraying of colored liquid. The accompanying videos are examples of the celebration in different places. A parade will be held on Saturday in Richmond Hill, Queens.
