Nigel Hughes offers resignation as AFC Chairman

August 6, 2013 · By Stabroek editor

AFC Chairman Nigel Hughes today offered his resignation to the party after what he said was a clear attempt to tarnish the name of the AFC relative to its publicly stated positions on the Amaila Hydro project. He referred to a news items in today’s edition of the Kaieteur News.

His press release issued today follows:

PRESS RELEASE

The headline in today’s Kaieteur News “Nigel Hughes is company Secretary of Amaila Hydro Inc” was difficult to miss both in prominence and import.

The incorporation of the Amaila Falls Hydro Inc and my appointment as secretary have been a matter of public record since the incorporation of the company in April 2009.

I welcome and support the publication of this fact and as I do any other matter pertinent to the issues surrounding the Amaila Falls debate.

When the issue of Amaila falls Hydro project became a matter of public interest I immediately disclosed my interest to the Leadership of the Alliance for Change (AFC).

I also asked to be recused from participating in their deliberations on the matter.

The provision of this public information by a prominent chartered accountant to the Kaieteur News at this time could only have been for the purpose of explicitly or implied suggesting that I have been advancing the cause of my clients in the deliberations by the AFC on the Amaila issue.

I completely without reservation reject this contention.

I have at all times acted professionally and disclosed to the party my relationship with the Client as the client has been aware of my position in the party.

As a result of this clear attempt to tarnish the name of the AFC and its publicly stated positions on the Amaila Falls Hydro project I have today offered my resignation as Chairman to the Alliance for Change.

C.A. Nigel Hughes

Comments.

Nigel Hughes, you seem to be a good person, but this is a clear case of conflict of interest. You did the right thing by resigning from one of those positions.

I wish that Guyana's Minister of Finance and his wife would look at you and follow suit. Their conflict of interest situation continues to be an embarrassment to the international financial community.

  • SLACKY

Nigel!
Your appointment as company secretary of Amaila Hydro Inc is PUblic record then why you only resign from the AFC when Kaieteur News mentioned it today?????.

ONE OTHER QUESTION THAT I NEED AN ANSWER FOR: ARE YOU OR YOUR SPOUSE SHARE HOLDERS OF THIS ENTITY TOOO???????WHY YOU DIDN'T RESIGN FROM THE AMAILA HYDRO INC BOARD, INSTEAD AND KEEP YOUR CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE AFC???????YOU ARE BETTER THAN THE PPP/PNC, YOU OUTCLASSED THEM WITH YOUR ENTREPRENEURAL SKILLS.

  • Amen-Ra
    • How many politician I guyana would do that, I respect nigel integrity to me he did the right thing.
    •  1 upvotes # Suresh    The haters, racists and PPP paid bloggers are out the full colours. They cannot contain themselves. While I understand Hughes' position NONE of you in the CORRUPT PPP can put your little toe in his shoes.

Why then the members were not informed
Why only now it's known
Shouldn't head roll?
What else is hidden from members from all the Lawyers/politic ian?

This self-important EGOMANIAC who perpetually accuses the GoG of corruption is finally exposed himself ... POETIC JUSTICE at its finest.

Kaieteur News should now start digging into the affairs of more members of the reactionary, regressive opposition cabal - aPOO & afc.

regardless if it is or is not a conflict of interest.  The public perception is important.  You can bet this issue may come up in the next election unless the AFC presents the issue in a good way like "even though Hughes was working for the Project because of his strong ethics he went against his own interests and put Guyana first by supporting his party going against the project".

Dude get it into your noggins...the damage is to Hughes who ought to have resigned earlier. It is not on the AFC who, he lobbied them, did not accede to his wishes and voted against the project. Would Ramotar fire his sons who are squatting on leech jobs or the impoverished Vishal who because of the government involvement was able to leverage some 35 million in Chinese loans? You folks are the crooks who are benefiting from your corruption.

Bhai, Dat FOOL is DUMB to understand what you are stating.

You and your PPP blinkers alone can see! Get real fool. The reason the project is shelved is because the AFC refused to go along with its bloated funding. Were they to benefit they would gladly not kick a stink and the PPP would be happy since they would be going to the bank on this. Well, the AFC did not let it through the gates and it still flounders.

As chairman, the AFC still voted against his interest and in the interest of the people....Did ramotar try to stop OMAI from purchasing Demba at a fire sale 5 million only to be resold for 40 a few years later as is? Get real punk. You pretend this is a travesty and it would if it came out later that the AFC did vote for it despite popular objections in the masses. They however, did not vote for it.

Were she intent like Ramotar was when he squatted on OMAI board ans oversaw their purchases of assets at fire sale prices which they resold at hundreds of percent mark up, then you would have something bad to say.

You are probably wondering why the PNC muckracker went to such lengths to expose this duplicity given that the AFC, of which Nigel Hughes is the chairman, and the PNC's A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) appear joined at the hip. Well the AFC's mouthpiece the Stabroek News today reported that Khemraj Ramjattan has had a change of heart and will support the Amaila hydro. And this now leaves the PNC's APNU alone in the woods in terms of opposition to the project. Already we are hearing how Ramjattan's u-turn was brought about by internal pressures being exerted by the Hughes' who stand to loose out if it fails. And its our guess as well as yours out of whose propaganda machinery this emanated from. So readers can look forward to more revelations and counter revelations in the coming weeks as the saga unfolds.

Only last week you generated at least a dozen threads attacking the AFC for voting this bill down. Having not gained any traction on that you are now hell bent on proving the impossible, that voting against this bill and against any association that might enrich members of their contingency they are being hypocrites. Now, make up your sniveling mind on what is wrong; voting against this bill and against any perceived associated interests or voting for it?

The AFC seems to be saying No one day and yes the next, after voting down the bill, the AFC now says they are going to support the project, one now knows why they want to support it, leaked information revealled Nigel was on the Hydro project payroll....

Ramjattan wants to support Amaila

Plans to build a hydro-electric project in this country took a step closer to reality with a key Opposition Parliamentarian saying he stands ready to support the Amaila Falls deal
.
Amid the logjam over the deal and the developer threatening to pull out if there is no national consensus, key Opposition Member of Parliament Khemraj Ramjattan yesterday said he would support the project.

JB, stop fighting the truth, the Guyanese populace now realize the real reason why Nigel was into politics, today he choice his lucrative position on the hydro project in-front of his job as chairman on the AFC. The Guyanese populace aren't no fools Hughes has lost any credibility  he had left among the Guyanese  people.

Actually people are pleased to see the AFC lead by example. The AFC cannot fret and complain that Ashni Singh's wife does Ashni's audits and allow this to continue.
