Promoters fail to pay Indian Soap stars

March 24, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

- Third show cancelled

By Rehana Ahamad

Although the four Indian soap stars managed to thoroughly entertain the relatively large Guyanese audiences at both the Guyana National Stadium and at the Tuschen Community Centre Ground, they are still to receive full payments for their work.
As such, the Port Mourant, Berbice leg of their tour has been cancelled, with Promoter Christine Persaud claiming to have been “robbed.”
“We sold so many tickets and yet, we don’t know where the money went. I think I’ve been robbed or something,” she told this newspaper yesterday.

Persaud noted though that her partner, “Popo” (only name given) will remain in Guyana while she goes to the United States to organize more money for the artistes to be paid.
The international artistes who managed to create exciting memories for local fans are Pavitra Rishta’s Asha Negi (Purvi), along with her onscreen counterpart, Rithvik Dhanjani (Arjun); Suhasi Dhami, better known for her role as ‘Abha’ in the TV series Yahan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli; and ZeeTV’s Choti Bahu,  Rubina Dilaik (Radhika).
Speaking briefly with this newspaper yesterday, Dilaik (Radhika) said that everything with payments seems to be okay.
Asked directly if she received her money from promoters of the ‘Bollywood Stars Live’ show, Dilaik responded, “Ya! Everything is fine.”
However, a local performer who has been working closely with the stars of India told Kaieteur News that ‘Abha’, ‘Purvi’ and ‘Arjun’ have not yet received full payments.
“I am not sure what the case is with Radhika at this point, but Arjun, Purvi and Abha still have to collect the balances from the two shows in Tuschen and the National Stadium.”
Reliable sources have informed that thus far, Anil Bheem and the BMRZ Band out of Trinidad and Tobago, along with the local contract-advertiser, Sukhram; Master of Ceremonies, Joel Ghansham;  Sita Panday and Ishara Dance Troupe are yet to receive any form of payments.
It is no secret that there has been some confusion ever since the show was announced less than three weeks ago.
“The first problem is that the promotion for the event was horrible! The organizers just jumped right into bringing these artistes. They did absolutely no proper ground work,” the source said.

Asha Negi [Purvi) left during her rocking performance at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

He added that it was ridiculous that there were only five ticket locations countrywide for a show of that magnitude.
“You have four Indian soap stars here, and a great cast for a show. They could’ve made this a massive success, but with the way it was organized, the show didn’t do as well as it could have,” the source said.
He added though that the crowd turnout at the shows was great, even amid the sloppy promotion work.
“They had no one who is experienced to help them in setting up the show, and I don’t think they managed to make any profit. I wasn’t paid, and I am highly upset, but I think they came up with the idea and they had big expectations and it all backfired. They didn’t do their homework,” the source, who was a part of the show, maintained.
According to Joel Ghansham, the show was not even coordinated, and that he and ‘Arjun’ were forced to improvise at the last minute.
“Me and him, we came up with the funny parts of the show and him mocking me to get ‘Purvi’ and so on…he kept asking if I was okay with it and I said yes; let’s do it,” Ghansham recalled.
This publication understands that as a result of being owed for the show at Tuschen, ‘Purvi’, ‘Abha’ and ‘Arjun’ were apprehensive about appearing for the Stadium concert on Saturday night.
But, as a result of the large crowd support, the actor and actresses came out at the last minute to perform at around 23:00hrs.
Kaieteur News understands that as of last evening, most of the stars left their rooms at the Princess Hotel and were residing with an locally-based Indian family until their scheduled departure later today.
“They said that they don’t want any problems, so they are leaving. But they are really upset though,” a source told this newspaper.
The performances, which ended around 02:00 hours, were all spectacular.
First of the four on stage was ‘Radhika,’ who, with the help of local models, showcased some of her exclusive designs of Indian garments. Beautifully decked in a bright red and blue sari, the Choti Bahu did an entertaining dance from Alka Yagnik’s hit song- ‘Ek Do Teen’ from the movie Teezab.
Following her was Suhasi Dhami ‘Abha’ who was backed by the talented ‘Ishara’ dancers. Hers was also a stunning performance that had members of the audience on their feet, and saw one fan even going up on stage, positioned on one knee, asking the Indian beauty for her hand in marriage.
Next up was Pavitra Rishta’s Asha Negi who was suddenly no longer playing her sweet and emotional character ‘Purvi,’ but a dancing diva who had been flirting with TV personality, Joel Ghansham, even in the presence of her onscreen and real life lover, Rithvik ‘Arjun’ Dhanjani.
But it was all well as she childishly reminded the audience that she was married four times in the still running television series- Pavitra Rishta. “I have found my fifth husband in Guyana,” the actress joked.
The night’s theme centered on Ghansham battling the Indian heartthrob for his girlfriend, with the most entertaining aspect being the two in a dance off to the hit Chutney song- ‘Yam Bakabana’.
And with ‘Purvi’ joining in, ‘Arjun’ reminded humorously that she is the ‘Ardash Bahu’ (ideal daughter-in-law) of Pavitra Rishta who should not be whining away onstage. But evidently she did not care, and went on to giving the ‘Chutney Whine’ with Ghansham.
Another highlight of the night was ‘Arjun’ and his ‘sweaky’ lie detecting chicken, which exposed a member of the audience who claimed that he has no relationship with anyone besides his wife.
The crowd was also pleased with ‘Abha’ who sang the hit Chutney song – ‘Leh go me nah Raja.’
But who can forget little Deon Persaud, who created storm with his Michael Jackson dance moves.
Saturday night’s show ended with hundreds of fans forcing themselves into the stars’ dressing tent for photo opportunities.

This is a recurring issue that has persisted for decades.

The popular American saxophonist Ace Cannon performed in Guyana in the 1990s and didn't get full pay from his promoters. He was almost stranded in Guyana. Same thing happened to The Platters, a group whose recordings we enjoyed in the 1960s. They were also left on their own in Guyana around 1995.

The Government of Guyana gives these people permission to hold these concerts, and the Ministry responsible has make sure that an amount should be lodged, so that in case of situation like this, the lodgement is forfeited and the promoters goes to jail and Guyana does not get a bad name for robbing artistes. asj should not be telling the Govt how to run a country.

Indian soap star- ‘Arjun’ wants

promoters arrested

March 25, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

Tweets- “Worst experience with us is Guyana…because of the organizers- Christine and Popo entertainment. They haven’t paid people their due, including us.”
Rithvik Dhanjani, better known for his role as ‘Arjun’ in the hit television series, ‘Pavitra Rishta’, is calling on authorities to arrest the promoters of ‘Bollywood Live with the stars,’ which got underway on Friday last at the Tuschen Community Centre Ground.
He tweeted, “Worst experience with us is Guyana…because of the organizers- Christine and Popo entertainment. They haven’t paid people their due, including us.”

Dhanjani further posted, “Never wanted my first experience in Guyana to be like this. Christine and Popo entertainment deserves to be behind bars. Spread the word guys.”
The Indian heartthrob, along with his co-star, Asha Negi (Purvi), Yahan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli’s lead actress, Suhasi Dhami (Abha) and Choti Bahu’s Rubina Dilaik (Radhika), have been in Guyana since last week Tuesday.
They were scheduled to perform at three major events over the weekend.
Despite being owed, the artistes still appeared and delivered massively to the thousands who showed up at the Tuschen Community Centre Ground and the Guyana National Stadium on Friday and Saturday nights respectively.
They however cancelled the Berbice leg of their tour, which was scheduled for Sunday, and left the country early Monday morning, without receiving their full dues.
On this note, he tweeted, “I feel so sorry for people in Berbice because they must have paid for the tickets and these promoters will not pay anybody back. This is ridiculous.”
In addition to the international artistes, several local entertainers along with Anil Bheem and the BMRZ Band out of Trinidad and Tobago have also not been paid.
Errant promoter, Christine Persaud claims that although many tickets were sold, she does not know where the monies went.
“I think I’ve been robbed or something,” the woman maintained.
She told Kaieteur News that her business partner, “Popo” (only name given) will remain in Guyana while she goes to the United States to organize more money for the artistes to be paid.
However, the person who has been hired to carry out promotional works here believes that the woman will leave the country and never return.
“I think she gon go away and hide. When she leave here, I know she wouldn’t come back. De woman gon disappear with all we money, and nobody ain’t gon know where she gone,” Harrychand Sukhan told this newspaper yesterday.
The man explained that in addition to the monies owed to him for his service, the promoters also have to repay him some borrowed cash.
“They owe me millions, including the money I spent from my pocket, and I frighten that this woman gon leave de country and disappear without paying us,” Sukhan stressed.
The man noted too that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has not yet been paid for the tickets sold.
“They paid the entertainment taxes, but I don’t know wah gon happen, because they still owe GRA and if this woman goes way tomorrow (today), she ain’t coming back, I got a strong feeling of that,” the angry man said.
Meanwhile, when contacted yesterday, Head of the GRA, Khurshid Sattaur promised to investigate the situation.
“I will look into it, and if anything, we can stop her (the organizer) from leaving the country,” Sattaur said.
Christine Persaud was also fingered in the operations of a fraudulent Nursing Home in New York City.
And, Kaieteur News understands that Suhasi Dhami (Abha) has still not been paid in full for her last performance here in 2013. Yet, the artiste disregarded her first experience with the Guyanese promoter, and returned, only to be robbed again.
Following the ‘Music of the World 2’ concert, the whereabouts of promoter, Mahendra Ramkelawan remains unknown.
Such scenarios continue even as Guyana promotes entertainment tourism. Efforts to contact the Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali, and the Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Indranauth Haralsingh, were futile

Ministry eying ‘performance bond’ for entertainment promoters

In light of four Indian soap opera stars claiming to have been robbed by promoters in Guyana, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce is now looking to institute a ‘performance bond.’

According to subject Minister, Irfaan Ali, this initiative is being eyed as a means of ensuring that promoters and promotion groups are held to some level of responsibility. “We are now looking at the whole issue, and we realize that something of the sort should be done,” Ali told this newspaper recently. In explaining the procedures that organizers have to go through when bringing international artistes to Guyana, Ali said that they usually have to first become registered. “Then they have to get the necessary permissions from GRA (Guyana Revenue Authority)… The promotion groups are private entities, but as long as they are registered, they can bring in artistes,” the Tourism Minister said. This explanation was echoed by Head of the GRA, Khurshid Sattaur, who added that as long as the promotion group is registered and the required taxes are paid, promoters can bring in their artistes. “That is about it. We don’t have a law for bringing in artistes. As long as they are registered and they follow the procedures, anybody can bring them,” Sattaur said. He added, “There are also other requirements and permits that need to be followed, like from the police to say for how long the show will go on and so…these don’t have anything to do with us really though,” Sattaur pointed out. The aforementioned Indian soap stars are Pavitra Rishta’s Rithvik Dhanjani (Arjun) and his co-star, Asha Negi (Purvi); Yahan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli’s lead actress, Suhasi Dhami (Abha) and Choti Bahu’s Rubina Dilaik (Radhika). They arrived in Guyana on March 19, and departed in an irritable state of mind on March 24, last, after not being fully paid by promoters of Christine and Popo Entertainment. Dhanjani, in a Tweet the day after performing at the Guyana National Stadium on March 23, said, “Worst experience with us is Guyana…because of the organizers- Christine and Popo entertainment. They haven’t paid people their due, including us.” He further tweeted, “Never wanted my first experience in Guyana to be like this. Christine and Popo Entertainment deserve to be behind bars. Spread the word guys.”

The stars were scheduled to perform at three major ‘Bollywood Live with the Stars’ shows. Kaieteur News understands that despite being owed for the first event at the Tuschen Community Centre Ground, the actor and actresses showed up for the second show at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. They however cancelled the Berbice leg of their tour, which was scheduled for the following day, and left the country without receiving their full dues. Following an article by this publication, the promoters, Christine Persaud and “Popo” held a press conference at the Princess Hotel, and did not invite Kaieteur News, the media entity to first break the news. Persaud, during that media briefing, defended herself and partner “Popo,” by accusing the artistes of being greedy. The woman apparently told reporters at the press conference that the stars saw the massive crowd at the Stadium from their Princess Hotel room and demanded that they be paid more money. She described the Kaieteur News article, which highlighted the cries of several artistes, including locals, as being “a fat lie.” Persaud lamented that she was sabotaged, noting that thousands of tickets were sold for the shows, but the monies were not recovered. The woman had said that she would be leaving the country to go back home to the United States of America, to arrange money to pay the several local entertainers and Anil Bheem and the BMRZ Band out of Trinidad and Tobago. They too left Guyana without collecting their payments. However, Harrychand Sukhan, who was hired by Christine and Popo Entertainment to conduct promotional works here, managed to stop the woman from leaving. He has reportedly moved to the courts for an injunction to prohibit the woman’s departure from Guyana. He believes that had she left, Persaud would have disappeared without repaying them. The man explained that in addition to the monies owed to him for his service, the promoters also have to repay him some borrowed cash amounting to millions. While Christine Persaud has been fingered in the operations of a fraudulent Nursing School in New York, her partner who goes only by “Popo” has a history of bad show business, especially in Trinidad and Tobago. He has also been accused of being a con artiste. A few local entertainers, who have been working closely with Persaud, believe that the woman was indeed ripped off; not by the Indian soap stars, but the people she hired to manage the sale of tickets. “Initially, she hired Popo and Popo in turn hired some other people, and many of believe that he and his employees might have been the ones to con her,” one performer told Kaieteur News.
