WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of Americans galvanized by last month’s Florida school massacre rallied in cities across the country on Saturday to demand tighter gun laws.

Carrying signs with slogans such as “If they choose guns over our kids, vote them out,” protesters in Washington jammed Pennsylvania Avenue as students from the Parkland, Florida, high school where 17 people were shot to death called on lawmakers and President Donald Trump to confront the issue.

The massive March For Our Lives rallies, some led by student survivors from Parkland, aim to break legislative gridlock that has long stymied efforts to increase restrictions on firearms sales in a nation where mass shootings like the one on Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have become frighteningly common.

“Politicians: either represent the people or get out. Stand with us or beware, the voters are coming,” Cameron Kasky, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, told the crowd.

Another Parkland survivor, David Hogg, said it was a new day. “You can hear the people in power shaking,” he said to loud applause.

“We’re going to make sure the best people get in our elections to run not as politicians, but as Americans. Because this - this - is not cutting it,” he said, pointing at the white-domed Capitol. “We can and we will change the world!”

This is when too much is too much. I hope this movement gets the nation's representatives attention to bite the bullet and make gun laws stricter. Fighting the NRA is tough when politicians receiving big bucks from them, but voters have the final saying.

Prash, with all due respect, I totally disagree with you. Who needs an assault rifle and for what reason? Who needs a magazine that holds 30 rounds. Come on brother, let's save our children.

No one is seeking gun control. For as long as I can remember, all that has been asked is COMMONSENSE gun control. Like Prashad, Marco Rubio is a skonk (not saying that Prashad is a skont) for suggesting that it is to ban guns. Rick Santoran is also a skonk for just suggesting on Inside Politics that those kids should take responsibility and learn CPR so they can help their classmates in a situation like what happened in Parkland.

Back to the comment about guns and hunting. As much as I cannot understand the fascination with guns, I cannot also understand hunting as a sport. People used to hunt for food and I they still have a right to hunt if it is for food. To kill another living creature just for sport is unconscionable. Same as catch and release. We hurt when we stump our toes or get a paper cut. We can even reflect on the blister when water touches our open lacerations. Yet we don't even reflect the injury we inflict on fishes when we practice catch and release. Lets all seek to become human again.

When enough is enough, people take matters into their own hands and politicians will have to listen. It's estimated to be over one million strong in Washington, DC. No one can deny the will of the people by looking over this crowd.

The NRA backed Republicans are in deep doo-doo if these students carry on with this campaign. Seems like it was organized mostly by female students. The women in this country are speaking out and the politicians need to listen. More power to the women.

A recent poll shows women voters are 30% more likely to support Democrats than Republicans. Something like 63% to 30%.
