Woman lies to get husband arrested, charged
A woman, who lied to the police about being threatened by her husband leading to him being arrested and charged,
was ordered detained by city Magistrate, Ann McLennan yesterday.
After Charmaine Sookram’s husband was charged, she admitted that when she made the complaint at the police station last Saturday, she was confused but that he had not made any threats to her.
Her lies led to an innocent man being arrested, detained by police and brought before the courts. It was revealed that Sookram told officers that her husband threatened her with poison and a gun. It is unclear what she claimed that he intended to do with those items.
The Magistrate who heard Sookram’s tale said that the court would make her an example. McLennan emphasised that it is not right for any person to go to the police station and make false allegations just to get someone arrested and brought before the court.
The case against the man was dismissed. She emphasised that it is an offence punishable by law to make false allegations against someone.
“You will be kept in the court lockups until the rising of the court,” the Magistrate ordered.
Sookram was then led to the police lockups where she remained until the end of the day. It is unclear whether a charge will be leveled against her.
