Independence greetings flow in

Georgetown, GINA, May 24, 2012

As Guyana celebrates its 46th independence anniversary, greetings continue to pour in, with several countries recommitting to strengthening their relations with Guyana.

British Guiana became independent Guyana on May 26, 1966 after years of British colonial rule and determined efforts by Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham among others.

Congrats from India

President of India H.E. Pratibha Devisingh Patil expressed greetings on behalf of the Government and people of India and on her own behalf. The message read: “The warm and friendly relations between India and Guyana have in recent times further enhanced through exchange of high level visits and people to people contacts. Our bilateral relations have gained momentum through ongoing technical and development co-operation. Our close contacts in the UN and interaction through CARICOM, signifies our enduring commitment to the cause of developing countries, and I am confident that under your leadership this spirit of cooperation will continue.”

She expressed best wishes for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of Guyana.

Her Majesty –the Queen of England

Independence greetings from Buckingham Palace to President Donald Ramotar and the People of Guyana came from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth 2.

The message read, “It gives me great pleasure to send your Excellency my congratulations on the celebration of your National Day, together with my best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of the Government and people of Guyana in the coming year.”

Kingdom of the Netherlands

Her Majesty Queen Beatrix’s message stated: “On the occasion of your National Day, I extend to Your Excellency my congratulations and my best wishes for the well-being of the people of Guyana.”

Cuba

Cuban President Raul Castro Ruz’s message read, “on the occasion of the 46th Anniversary of the Independence of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, I cordially congratulate you and renew to you the resolve to continue enhancing the relations of friendship and cooperation between our countries… Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.”

For everyday of the years, some nation somewhere on the globe is celebrating independence. That is a full time job for civil servant, ie, telegraphing congrats.

the problem is the pomp and circumstance does not match with the reality. Indians and Africans are still in a bitter power struggle as they were in a pre independence state. Add to that our Native peoples are still to get their land as agreed to as a condition for independence.

Further they are so disrespected as one of their own , a sell soul in the position of the minister of Amerindian affairs see the problem as residing with them. If only they would assimilate with the larger population they will be whole.

I would advise the lady to ask the same of the Indians ie to assimilate with Africans for example or to reflect on what good assimilation projects across the world has done for other cultures.

She need to go to a back to Muruca, put on tribal garb and take a walk into our world to become reacquainted with it. Digging out old Campbell's journals and reading them as she reflect on where we are could be therapy for her as well

We are a forest people and to take that from us leaves us without moorings and adrift. That is where we are presently under successive predatory regimes foisted on us since independence. We ought to be on sack cloth and ashes lamenting our plight on this day. All of us that is.

We are still to be independent of the abuse we heap on each other by failure to acknowledge we are different and need to be respected mutually an our political reality as having specific needs to be accommodated. Black people need to know that Indians respect them and the party of their choice. The idea of the PNC being the quintessential evil has to go the way of the do do. Thank our lucky stars for the AFC.
