India launches scheme to monitor toilet use

An Indian man after defecating in the open Nearly 600 million people in India have no access to toilets and defecate in the open

India is checking whether thousands of newly built toilets are being used.

Half a million latrines have been built in homes under a cleanliness drive begun by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October. But many people still prefer to defecate outside.

Sanitation inspectors will go door-to-door to survey household lavatory use, noting the results on mobile phones and tablets, a government statement said.

Earlier surveys merely monitored the construction of toilets, it adds.

In its news release, the ministry of drinking water and sanitation said it "will launch a nationwide real time monitoring of use of toilets.

"Earlier, the monitoring was done only about the construction of toilets, but now the actual use of toilets will be ascertained on a sustained basis."

Launching the Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) on 2 October, Mr Modi promised to build half a million toilets within 100 days.

The government says it has built 503,142 household latrines since then.

However, studies in the past have suggested that many people in rural India, despite having working toilets at home, continue to go out into the open believing it is more sanitary to defecate far from home.

Hundreds of millions of people defecating outside leads to large numbers of hygiene-related diseases and premature deaths.

Reports say some of the new toilets are being used as storerooms by people who consider toilets at home unhygienic.

Campaigners say that building toilets is not enough and that motivating people to use them is equally important.

The government has pledged to make India "100% free" of open defecation by 2019.

So another joke about Afghan coolies you might like.

We had hundreds of Afghan workers at our base to do most of the civilian labor intensive work. We would only drink bottled water. So we extended them the same courtesy. We had running water but the water was only used for showering and shaving (not even brushing teeth) as it was considered too contaminated with chemicals for any internal use whatsoever.

These idiot coolies would take the bottled water (imported by plane from America at great cost) and use it to wash their ass after a visit to the pit latrines and dirty feet for their prayers and instead used the contaminated water for drinking purposes. The very same water we begged them not to.

After a while we just kinda gave up.

The water was contaminated from the chemicals used to treat it. It was otherwise clean. Just not considered safe for drinking.

You're probably right though. But I doubt we could have all showered with bottled drinking water.

LMAO LMAO

I see your point

We had like this mini water treatment plant that would pump underground water that was pretty clean, then we'd pump it full of chemicals to toxic levels, then we'd use it.

Doesn't make much sense when you see it in writing

We were somewhere in the middle of East Coast countryside, and my navigator was GTown girl. She saw an outhouse and ran in fast. When she come out, she tell me she see a bottle inside.

i asked her if she used it...she said, yes, she pee in the bottle and then empty it in the toilet hole.

Guyana is a strange country with strange people. When I was a young boy In Guyana, I sold my (presumably) expensive bicycle because I wanted to "upgrade" to a duck. I read a story about a duck and damnit I was determined to own a fancy duck. To hell with this silly bicycle.

what Bill stories?

It was a pet duck. I loved animals as a child. Also, in a household of adults I was the only child.

I loved this animal as only a child could. And then one day, I noticed my duck missing from our yard while smelling curried duck wafering from the window of our negro neighbors. ***$king people I tell ya

You disparage Tobagonians as being nothing when compared to your fine civilization.

I am willing to bet that most Tobagonians would be astounded as to how primitive many from this "civilization" appear to be.

Over 90% of Tobagonians have indoor plumbing and the few who don't use latrines.

Are you actually trying to stake out a position that there is no such thing as Indian Civilization?

Do you write your own history books?

The fact that some or many modern day Indians engage in arguably uncivilized behavior doesn't mean a damn thing when it comes to their status as a civilization, and a classical one at that. You are the only one I have ever heard who would even approach the position of Indian Civilization being something that is disprovable. You have less intellectual company there than a creationist.

I never once said Tobagonians are nothing. They are Anglicized Blacks. That is not some calumny. We're all Anglicized Blacks or Coolies to some significant degree. That is not an insult.

What I do know is that the contributions of India to math and science has nothing to do with the illiterate peasants who left India, and certainly nothing to do with Guyana, which trails the rest of the Caribbean in its CSEC average performance in math and English.

So why are you claiming it?  That civilization is no more relevant to contemporary Indo Guyanese than it is to Tobagonians.

The culture that was brought to Guyana was that of impoverished peasants from some of the most impoverished parts of India.  From your frequent denigration of "coolies" I suspect that this isn't a culture which you wish to be connected to.

I doan know about all of them being illiterate. Some a dem peasants had to be literate in Hindi and Urdi to perform those pujas and lead the prayers to the moon god.

This is very novel as well. Divorcing even the peasants from their own civilization. I'm pretty sure that not every Greek was a Socrates or a Solon. But we do not divorce the Greek peasant from his connection to Greek Civilization.

Almost all immigrant populations tend to be impoverished peasants from the old world, that fact does not act to divorce them from their parent culture.

The majority of the first British settlers in North America were not members of the House of Lord but largely illiterate peasants and criminals. That didn't make them less British than the British aristocrats.

I suspect, this exercise of attempting to divorce the Indentured Servants from Indian Civilization is just part of the fantasies West Indian black lefty intelligentsia need to make up so they can feel better about themselves.
