Vrindavan to have India’s tallest temple for Krishna
Picture
“Just like we have got a tendency to construct a skyscraper building. As in your country, you do. So you should not be attached to the skyscraper building, but you can utilize the tendency by constructing a big temple like skyscraper for Krishna. In this way, you have to purify your material activities.”(Srila Prabhupada in a class in front of the samadhi of Srila Rupa Gosvami in Vrindavan, Oct 29th, 1972)

“This is Krishna conscious vision: ‘Oh, there are so many skyscrapers. Why not construct a nice skyscraper temple of Krishna?’ This is Krishna consciousness.” (Srila Prabhupada lecture in Bombay, Feb 25th, 1974)

VRINDAVAN/MATHURA: A 210-metre-high temple is soon going to change the skyline of Vrindavan in Mathura district. The project, whose foundation stone will be laid on March 16, has been conceived by Madhu Pandit Dasa, president of ISKCON, Bangalore, and will consist of a grand temple of Sri Krishna at its centre and many other interesting elements around it. Poised to be the tallest and largest religious structure in India, the monumental temple, named the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, with a footprint of about four and a half acres and a built-up area of 540,000 square feet, will integrate elements of modern architecture with traditional Indian temple architecture.

In an exclusive interview to TOI, senior vice-president of ISKCON, Bangalore, Chanchalapathi Dasa, said that the project was an attempt to put Vrindavan on the world map. So will it be like any other temple for Krishna devotees? No, says Dasa. “Everything begins in the human heart and that is where we want to make a difference by instilling Krishna consciousness (the term used by ISKCON to mean good thoughts, ideas and intentions) through this massive project,” he said.

Global landscape designers would recreate the 12 scared and verdant forests (dvadasha kanana) of Braj in an area of 26 acres around the temple, from descriptions provided in Srimad Bhagavatam. There would be boating facilities in the Yamuna creek and depictions of ‘Krishna leela’ in the forests. From the ground level, a capsule elevator will rise through the temple core, taking visitors through different planetary systems as described in the Vedic literature in a sound, light and dioramic show. The climax of the elevator ride will be the viewing gallery situated at a height of 700 feet.

Dasa told TOI that tourism was not the sole purpose behind this project. “It is not just another sacred edifice of concrete, stone and glass. This project is dedicated to playing a larger role in shaping the future of this country. It will not only house a temple for the worship of Sri Krishna but will also become a centre for disseminating the profound message of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, delivered in a modern context. We wish to inculcate the glorious Vedic values in today’s youth.”

Did you learned the language and had an Indian girlfriend while you were there?

Nah bai.  Anyway, India has many languages and in places like Mumbai, you are better off speaking English!  Everyone spoke English!

Tall buildings are more trouble than they are worth. They are energy inefficient and death traps in event of a fire. Lifting a glass of water to the top floor increases its value a hundred times given the energy expenditure.

The pros and cons will always be factors of architecture marvels. Since ancient time, mankind was aiming for the heavens and they still want to go higher in modern time. The pyramid is a living proof of ancient knowledge that fascinated mankind to explore and build beyond the boundaries.

All Glories to Ambarish Dasa.

This project is Dedicated to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupad (Our founder of Iskcon) in his mission to bring Krsna consciousness to the west and end the system of Caste Bramhana System in which all races can become Bramhanas as long as the follow four regulative principles of Krsna consciousness.

Dummy...the amount it will cost to supply water, fuel, and ordinary supplies to that top of that tower can lift a small sized state/city out of its misery. I am making the point that after a point it does not make sense to build upwards if you have land. Worse it does not make sense in areas of limited resources. After 32 feet up you are fighting gravity all the way

Clown, this is not an economic venture but a religious symbol.  That is the value proposition.  I'm sure our Indian brothers will apply the best technology to make it as safe and efficient as possible!

You should have advised the PNC that the Umana Yana was a fire hazard!

Tall buildings are for ostentation unless as in hongkong where space is scarce. As a religious symbol, ostentation combined with a resource drain adds up to blasphemy in one of the poorest nation in the world. God does not demand it. Get a tent.
