U.S “DELIVERS” 26 DEPORTEES AT CHEDDI JAGAN AIRPORT
With just one airline plying the Georgetown-New York route, United States Authorities decided to fly in 26 Guyanese nationals who have been deported from the United States for various offences.
The special flight arrived at Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan International Airport just after 3:30 pm on Tuesday with heavily armed U.S Security officials escorting the deportees off of the chartered MD-83 aircraft. Most of the deportees arrived in their U.S prison outfits and were met at the stairway of the aircraft by Guyanese immigration authorities.
News Source understands that the offences that the deportees would have served time for range from armed robberies and drug trafficking to murders and weapons possession.
They are expected to be processed and kept in custody at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport before being brought to the city where they will face additional processing and will have to provide statements while having their photographs and finger prints taken before being released from custody.
There are reports that the flight made a stop in the Dominican Republic before proceeding to Guyana. It is unclear whether that stop was to also facilitate the delivery of deportees.
Guyana has in the past expressed concern about the large number of deportees from the United States. In many cases, the persons who were deported would have left Guyana as children. There have been moves to develop a deportee reintegration system.
