Is Guyana becoming a suicidal society?

Lately, women are igniting themselves on fire and ingesting kerosene and other form of pesticide to end their lives. This has been the norm with older men and even younger men and women at their prime.

Every day when I read the news papers, I can't help to notice the killing, robbery and hardship many families have to endured in these tough times. To crown this problem, you have domestic violence followed by suicides that would put a family in greater misery.

When we look at the core of this matter, the children were made to suffer the most by not having a mother or father there after. This is a very painful ordeal just for the thought of committing suicide and leaving a bunch of young children to vent for themselves while a father is at work, or care less of what's happening to his family at home in his absent.

For Guyanese, this is real and someone's mother or father, brother or sister is laying in a coffin as we speak. Children at the age of twelve down to two years old are weeping not knowing what faith holds for them tomorrow. This issue gets the best of my attention and I am compelled to speak up.

Suicides have scared our nation for decades, and government intervention did little or nothing that proved unsuccessful to date. Though, this problem by itself is a delicate nature, it also has many questions that society don't have the answer to combat the problem.

This is not politics and we should not point fingers or blame each other at this juncture. This is a people's problem and a social issue in our society that never has an easy ending. We need to find common grounds and pinpoint the uncharted areas to save our people from this dreadful disease that is taking over the minds of our society.

Then you should hop on a plane, go down there and voice your concerns. Pounding the keyboards from afar is not going to cut it.

It is mainly an indian cultural thing. I have two friends from high school who are dead by their own hands and all over girls that did not even know they existed.

Y'all too weak. Quick to give way to emotional impulses. Why do you think these people in the country got all dem mango trees in their yards. It's not for decoration. they have their purposes.
And what is this unbearable suffering you speak of? Elaborate pleas.

Suicidal behaviour is a neglected public health issue especially in  middle- to- low-income communities. I suspect the Corentyne prevails with Black Bush Polder being the suicide capital. There is no access nor the accumulation of reliable information for anyone to make informed policy decisions on the prevalence.

The AFC and APNU are to be blamed for not pressuring thePPP for not making  suicidal ideation  a significant public health issue and for the failure to design, implement and evaluate a suicidal behaviour intervention plan.

For the masses, there is no purpose. Days are lazy.

Guyanese can live off the land. Many are eating and dress better than some in the USA and Canada who are struggling to pay their mortgages and expensive car loans.

Remittances and barrels have created a culture of dependency.

Remittance is going to many countries besides Guyana. Why we're not seeing suicides happening in other countries except Guyana? Suicides happen under many different circumstances. It is so unforeseeable that is cannot be treated effectively. You did mention that the AFC & APNU should pressure the PPP to pay more attention to this issue, and I totally agree. I think a joint effort can do a whole lot of good in society rather than just fighting for power.

Stormy, the topic begs the question what can be done to prevent suicide. Forget about the video and the stats, we're not debating that. You are a man with the electronic brains, come up with something that has not yet been discussed on the issue. And, let's not start with politics. Mitwah said one sensible thing, and I agree with him for all parties to come together and find a viable solution and make suicide prevention a priority. This matter had to be campaign upon until the idea is absorbed. What say you?

Just checking!

You may want to read this: Guyana has by far the highest suicide rate among countries in the Caribbean, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO.)
Guyana has also been listed in the top ten most suicidal countries, earning the ninth position which statistics reveal 45 suicides per 100,000 people. However, statistics show that of the more than 45 people who kill themselves, about one-fourth are women.

Share the stats and the source when you get a chance, would love to read!

this list shows them at #3...I had seen another list where they were #1...anyway, as you can see, depression in Guyana seems to be higher than a number of countries...even Haiti is lower than Guyana on the list
