Passport application services now available in Region 10

August 12, 2016 1:09 pm Category: latest news A+ / A-

Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Berbice) will be the first to have fully operationalised passport application services as the government moves to decentralise such services.

This announcement had first been made on July 15 by Minister of Citizenship Winston Felix, at the occasion of the ‘Meet the Public’ Initiative in Linden.

On Thursday last, the Minister visited Linden to participate in sensitisation activities in preparation for the Tuesday, August 16 launch on those services in Linden at the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) building. He also met with staff at the NIS when he visited the intended location.

“This initiative has its genesis in His Excellency’s [President David Granger] concept of providing government services in the towns. It is his view that government services should be delivered in the townships created, thereby avoiding unnecessary travel to Georgetown to conduct simple business with a government agency. It is in this regard that the Department of Citizenship has taken the initiative a stage further,” Felix said.

He explained that persons applying for the renewal of passports or the replacement of lost, damaged or filled passports will be able to make their applications weekly; on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will be able to uplift their passports the following Thursday. Persons applying for passports for the first time, however, will still be required to visit the Immigration Office in Georgetown due to the machinery required to generate first time machine-readable passports.

The minister said that since the current location in Linden is a temporary one, the move to have first time passport applicants acquire this service would not be possible until the ministry can acquire permanent premises. He added that efforts are being made to acquire a permanent location.

Minister Felix said that as the roll out of these services continues across the country, the ministry is also working with the E-Government Agency to provide other services such as the online passport applications and online visa applications. This, however, will take some time due to the need for capacity development with regard to connectivity in far outlying areas.

Following the implementation in Region 10, the decentralising of passport application services will expanded to other areas including: Mabaruma in the Waini, Region One (Barima-Waini); Anna Regina, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); New Amsterdam and Corriverton, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne); Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); Mahdia Region Eight (Potaro-Siparun

Why these dummies don't setup an online application process similar to the US to serve the people? I applied a few times entirely by online/mail in process.  PNC incompetency at its best.

People in countries like Guyana get orgasms seeing other people suffer through basic everyday lives. Your suggestions above don't fit into their need for those orgasms.

Its not about orgasms but rather an opportunity to collect bribes. Remember the PNC supporters who work in the passport offices didn't get 50% raises so they must squeeze the public for bribes to make up the deficit.

Makes me remember those long lines at the birth certificate, passport and tax exits offices back in the '80s. Nothing back then got done without passing a bribe.

Why didn't the PPP do this when they had at least 10 years to do so?

Its interesting that you accuse the PNC of incompetence when the same could have been said of the PPP.

Guyana has the lowest internet access in the Caribbean, beating only Haiti.  We aren't even getting into security issues, given that confidential info will need to be entered (DOB, etc).

They saw their PPP bosses becoming millionaires, even though these characters were too poor to even own a bicycle in 1992.  So why not also steal? Its not as if the $50 that they charge will make them rich.

I told you that there is no need for you to try hard to look stupid.  We already know that you are.

In fact the PPP supporters have a disposition to want to bribe to get what they want.  They even tried that in Barbados and the Bajans quickly told them that petty corruption isn't their style.  They leave that decadence to Guyanese and Trinis.

Exactly! Instead of stepping up to the plate and do the right thing, dem PPP say "nahhhh, leh we keep the status quo no sense change um, is abie time now anyway"

cain

CaribJ, Cain, So many people are fleeing Guyana since May 2015 when the PNC rigged the elections that it has become an overload on the passport system. It is only now that this has come to a head. But the PNC is in charge now, stop looking to the past to justify what your group of incompetent leaders now in office is not doing right.

In 1991 there were 142k in the PPP stronghold.  By 2012 only 109k.a net decline of 33k during the PPP era.

If even PPP supporters were fleeing the PPP, crowding Barbados and elsewhere what can I say.

Its already established that you are an idiot, due to the pummeling that you received at Saints.   You don't need to work hard to prove this.

Nonsense, you made up those numbers. The PPP supporter #s got fractures as the gullible like Gilly, Django, KrishanB and others switched allegiance to the AFC and other parties. What is factual is that the demand for passports escalated only under Jackass Granger's short tenure of 1 year.

Aaah. Druggie. What can we do with you?  Now Google "Guyana census" and look for links and it is all there.

Quite trying so hard to prove that you are a jackass.  We already know that you are.
