It’s a special honour for one growing family at the start of a new year — having the New Year’s baby.
For 2020, the first baby born in Edmonton was a girl, arriving at Grey Nuns Community Hospital at 12:36 a.m.
Madylin Joanne Lesley Baker, weighing 7-pounds-4-ounces, was born to Jayden and Bailey Baker, from Edmonton.

The Baker’s first child, Madylin’s original due date was also set to be a special day.
“We were due Christmas Day,” Bailey said. “She decided to wait, and make an even bigger surprise by making it another holiday.”
Bailey said she began contractions at 4 a.m. on Dec. 31. They had just made plans for New Year’s Eve the night before, with plans for induction set for the morning of Jan. 1.
“This whole Christmas season we were living day to day with our plans,” she said. “We didn’t make Christmas dinner, we didn’t really attend much.”
The family of three is expected to be released from hospital on Thursday, giving the new parents some time to learn the ropes.
“She’s a pooping machine,” said Jayden “I’ve changed at least 10 diapers… I’ve never changed any before.”
Around 6,300 babies are born each year at Grey Nuns.
Covenant Health said that one in five babies in the province are born at their Catholic healthcare sites.
