Ivana Trump Calls Herself "First Lady" in GMA Interview

Melania Trump may be living in the White House, but Ivana Trump considers herself President Donald Trump's original first lady. The first Mrs. Trump gave herself this title during a recent interview with Good Morning America.

During the interview, Ivana said she has the "direct number to the White House" but that she doesn't really use it.

"I don't really want to call him there because Melania is there and I don't want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like," she said before adding "because I'm basically first Trump wife, OK? I'm [the] first lady."

Still, Ivana doesn't seem jealous of Melania's position.

"I think for her to be in Washington must be terrible," Ivana said, according ABC News. "It's better her than me. I would hate Washington."

In response to Ivana's comments, Stephanie Grisham, a spokesperson for Melania, issued the following statement:

"Mrs. Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and The President. She loves living in Washington, DC and is honored by her role as First Lady of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books. There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex. Unfortunately only attention seeking and self-serving noise."

Ivana and the president were married from 1977 to 1992 and had three children together: Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump. When asked if she ever thought her ex would be president, Ivana said she did.

"Donald got letter from Reagan, President Reagan, and he said, 'You should run for president,'" she said. "And I think he could do it if there would not be a scandal."

Of course, the scandal Ivana was referring to was Donald's affair with Marla Maples, who he later married in 1993. Ivana didn't even refer to Maples by name but instead called her a "showgirl."

Ivana also said that she offers the president advice and that she agrees with him on certain aspects.

"Sometimes I tell him to just, not to speak that much, and tweet are the tweets," she said. "I think I don't disagree with him because he has so much press against him, so if he says something his words are going to be twisted immediately."

Early years

Ivana ZelníčkovÃĄ was born in the Moravian town of Zlín (formerly known as Gottwaldov), Czechoslovakia, the daughter of MiloÅĄ Zelníček, who was Czech, and Marie FrancovÃĄ, who was Austrian.[1] From a very young age, her father nurtured and encouraged her skiing talent. In the early 1970s, she attended Charles University in Prague.[2]

According to ZelníčkovÃĄ, she was selected as an alternate on the Czechoslovak ski team during the 1972 Winter Olympics, her specialties being the downhill and slalom.[3] However, in 1989, Petr PomeznÃ―, Secretary General of the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee, said, "Who is this Ivana woman, and why do people keep calling us about her? We have searched so many times and have consulted many, many people, and there is no such girl in our records."[4]

Personal life

In 1971, ZelníčkovÃĄ married Austrian real estate agent Alfred Winklmayr. They divorced in 1973.[5] She left Czechoslovakia for Canada to be with a childhood friend, George Syrovatka, who owned a ski boutique there. For the following two years, she lived in Montreal, improved her English by taking night courses at McGill University[citation needed], and worked as a model for some of Canada's top fur companies. ZelníčkovÃĄ then left Syrovatka and moved to New York to promote the Montreal Olympics.

In New York, ZelníčkovÃĄ met Donald Trump, son of real estate developer Fred Trump. On April 7, 1977, they married in a lavish wedding officiated by Norman Vincent Peale.[6] Donald and Ivana Trump became leading figures in New York society during the 1980s. They worked on several large projects, including the renovation of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, construction of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey and the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.[7][8] They had three children: Donald John Jr. (born December 31, 1977), Ivana Marie (born October 30, 1981, called Ivanka), and Eric Fredrick (born January 6, 1984). Donald Jr. learned to speak fluent Czech (with help of his maternal grandfather), while daughter Ivanka has only basic understanding of her mother's native tongue and Eric was not exposed to the language because at the time of his birth his grandparents were already comfortable enough in using English.[9][10] Ivana has eight grandchildren.[11]

Ivana took a major role in The Trump Organization. She became the Vice President of Interior Design for the company, leading the signature design of Trump Tower. Afterwards, her then-husband appointed her to head up the Trump Castle Hotel and Casino as president. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1988.[12]

In the late 1980s, she left Atlantic City to devote more time to her family. Her husband asked her to oversee the restoration of the landmark Plaza Hotel, and she took over as its president. She was named Hotelier of the Year in 1990.
