Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has responded to President David Granger’s March 20 letter and rejected the November timeline for elections.

After seeking the advice of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the Head of State officially informed Jagdeo that he will name a date for general and regional elections “shortly.”

However, Jagdeo in response made it known that the November timeline set out by GECOM is “totally unacceptable.”

As such, the Opposition Leader reminded the President that “at midnight tonight (March 21, 2019) his Government becomes illegal.”

Justice (Rt’d) James Patterson, the chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), wrote President David Granger, informing him that GECOM can run off elections in late November, which will be eight months after the expiration of the constitutional deadline.

With the passage of the No Confidence motion on December 21, the constitution dictates that elections be held in three months unless an extension is agreed to by two-thirds in the National Assembly.

The Government has denied that the country would head into a constitutional crisis after March 21, and the President has been adamant that his proclamation of an elections date is dependent on the advice he receives from GECOM.

In his letter to the President, the chairman of GECOM pointed to the need for house to house registration and said the Commission’s budget was being utilised for that purpose.

Jagdeo said there is no need for house to house registration since the current list was not challenged by the very parties for use in Local Government elections a few months ago.

So let Jagdeo run through the streets screaming.  He is a fraud because he wasn't ready to run today.  Who is the official PM candidate?  Rumors but no one confirmed.

Jagdeo must also understand that his sole role in the political process is as leader of the opposition, so if gov't is illegal, so is he.

There is currently no official government in Guyana. There is officially no Opposition either. That is the constitution crises that reasonable people were warning the PNC about since December 22, 2018 but the PNC being the ignorant group of people that they are failed to understand that. The PNC will now govern illegally but they are used to being in government against the rule of law. Guyana will soon be like Haiti again.

The PNC have all the cards if the International community does nothing!  After 23 years, the PPP still relies on the PNC dominated armed forces to protect the constitution.  Let me leave my cat to watch over the butter!

Why did the PPP not reform the Armed Forces to represent the Ethnic make up of the country during their 23 years in power?

Dave answered this question some while back. As I recall, he said the PPP government encouraged Indos to join the army. However, most Indos ignored the call due to relatively low pay and their reluctance to serve in the hinterland and localities far from their homes. As for those Indos who applied, the GDF gatekeepers allegedly put roadblocks in their way.

@Former Member, am I reporting your explanation accurately?

Cop out.  PPP was just too lazy and see fit to rely on what was there.
