He wants all MPs to disclose their wealth, but why? We are not as rich as him. He and his best friends are the rich ones, not us.” – Ramjattan.

Allegations that Guyana has been robbed blind by some politicians are still to be put to rest. Those accused of the wrong are still to answer questions on their accumulation of wealth.

Recently, former President Bharrat Jagdeo was, for at least the fourth time, asked about his wealth and the source of it.

He told the press, last week, that he is finally ready to make the necessary disclosures but will only do so if these will be done across the board. Jagdeo wants all Members of Parliament (MPs) to make similar disclosures.

Vice President (VP), Khemraj Ramjattan, has described Jagdeo’s new condition as “wholly outrageous.”

Ramjattan said that Jagdeo is missing the point. “None of us, and I can boldly say this, none of us in the government are even half as wealthy as Jagdeo. So it is not about us, the public has no reason to be interested in our wealth; he is the billionaire. Guyana wants to know about his wealth.”

Ramjattan said that Jagdeo’s move to set conditions highlights two issues; he still thinks he is in control and is authorized to outline how things are to be done, and that he has something to hide and has therefore decided to use delaying tactics.

Addressing the first issue, Ramjattan said that it has long been a character trait of Jagdeo to want to take control of things even when they are not really in his authority.

Jagdeo is also in denial that he has lost power, Ramjattan said. “He is yet to come to grips with the fact that he is no longer the boss.”

Ramjattan added that this is because the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) allowed Jagdeo to be king behind the throne during Donald Ramotar’s time as President. “So he is accustomed to running things; he was allowed to dominate the politics of the PPP.”

Ramjattan said that the sooner Jagdeo accepts the fact that David Granger is the President of Guyana, the sooner he will be able to cope with things.

The VP said that Jagdeo’s demand to have all MPs disclose their earnings is just a delaying mechanism to avoid speaking about his wealth. Ramjattan said this is outrageous mainly because other MPS are not in Jagdeo’s financial league.

 Vice President, Khemraj Ramjattan

Vice President, Khemraj Ramjattan

“He wants all MPs to disclose their wealth, but why? We are not as rich as him. Ramjattan does not own a pool, Ramjattan does not own a mansion in Pradoville so what is Jagdeo’s point? He and his best friends are the rich ones, not us,” said Ramjattan.

He said that Jagdeo’s wealth may very well supersede that of government MPs collectively.

The Vice President added that he is not aware of any of the politicians on the government’s side being multi-millionaires. He said, too, that those who have afforded themselves a decent living have done so legally.

“We in the government are not very wealthy…Jagdeo just does not want to tell the public about his. He does not want his wealth to be scrutinized and that in itself speaks a lot of how it was accumulated,” said Ramjattan.

“I do not want to get into a big debate on this but everyone knows about all the arrangements; we know about all the deals and all the contracts.”

Ramjattan drew a parallel to the fact that Jagdeo used tax dollars to build the Berbice River Bridge but allowed his “friends,” whose investments were minimal, to own it.

He said, “Look at the Marriott deal, and you will see clearly how he ran things while in office so no wonder how he is so rich.”

“I can continue, look at the Skeldon plant; that is one of the worst things he did. Then we have the Specialty Hospital with Surendra. What do all of these things point to?”

The Vice President told Kaieteur News that his government wants to work along with the PPP opposition and is therefore compelled to work with Jagdeo, being the Leader of the opposition. “But he must know that he is not in charge, he is no longer running things, and this country is now in better hands.”

Ramjattan added “He must be put to his place in that regard. I, Khemraj Ramjattan, will certainly put him to his place, because we all know how things end up when he is in charge.”

Jagdeo is the proud owner of a seaside mansion with pool and servant quarters. He never told the nation how is it that he could have afforded such a property on his earnings.

Ramjattan is getting lost in a maze of semantics. Guyana does not have the environment like the US for instance where financial disclosure by politicians while not required is highly advised. Jagdeo is accused by some and suspected by others of accumulating wealth illegally. The burden of that accusation is with the law enforcement of Guyana. I think that Jagdeo stating that he is willing to disclose the source of his wealth at the least shows a lack of concern which people think he should have. Him stating that he will willing do so if all do seems reasonable. Whether it is a penny or a dollar should not matter.

This far from the truth. Jagdeo challenged AFC/PNC MP's to declare their assets, including foreign based assets and they all ran for cover.

Let Ramjattan be the first one to publicly declare his assets.

What is Ramjattan hiding ? Why is Ramjattan trying to mislead the Guyanese public ?

The Hughes worked hard privately to accumulate their assets.

Jagdeo was a government employee with a fixed public income. Did he sell Rohee goat milk to pay for the mansion ?

Who is going to reimburse the government $100M to get Proda 2 ready ?

Hold it, hold it bai. The audits and tracking aren't done yet. When the President gets the final report, and when the Asset Recovery team goes into action, you'll see story. Meanwhile, Public Security Minister Ramjattan and Attorney General Basil Williams are eagerly awaiting the green light from Cabinet to put the police and special courts on Jagdeo's tail. Interesting times ahead.

Talk is cheap.

When the current government makes it mandatory that cabinet and parliamentary members plus pertinent individuals in government positions must declare their assets, then it will be reasonable to expect all members to adhere to the rules.

Thus far there are no such mandatory rules.

Perhaps as a start, the current government members should disclose their wealth while the government formulate the policy.

All AFC/PNC minister should declare this local and foreign assets. These chaps ran an election campaign on transparency.

Why are they now refusing to declare their assets ? Why are they now hiding from the Guyanese public ?

ALL minister should make their assets be known. What does Ramjattan have to hide ?

Ramjattan should not be throwing stones when the PNC has a glass house.

Well, they have the opportunity to make a start by disclosing their assets, rather than babbling about others.

It will be seen that perhaps by end of the current term in 2020, the government will not make firm legislation for members to disclose their assets.

It is no longer safe to walk the streets of Guyana.  It is also not safe for any Guyanese Canadians to visit Guyana.

During the PPP government, you must have been one of those guys who bypassed airport customs and got picked up by a PPP limo, so you  did not experience airport bandits and crime in the country.

It must have been hard to give up you diplomatic passport.

You want the new government to  correct in four months, what the PPP screwed up in 23 years ?

Alyu PPP rass feget too quick.

Tola

The PPP brought the country out of bankruptcy in just a few years after Burnham and the PNC destroyed it in their 28 year rule.  The PPP will again have to bail out the country after total destruction by the AFC and APNU alliance.

Let them declare all assets now, so in 5 years we can compare and see what wealth accumulated. So mr. Rumjaat, you be the first to disclose all asset and then point finger to the PPP. Right now the political climate is tense, touch Jagdeo and there is going to be riot. Granger wants stability and peace, Rumjaat can talk all he wants, but can't do nill.
