PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC - Eight people, including a Jamaican and six Guyanese have been detained after they were arrested on drug related charges following a search of a boat in which they were passengers.

The police said the names of those held have not been released.

Police spokesman Humphrey Naarden said a joint police and army patrol had spotted a speed boat crossing the Corentyne River from Guyana to the Dutch speaking country.

The spokesman said that the eight people, including three women, had been acting suspiciously and after a search was carried out 14 parcels containing the drugs were found.

β€œThe passengers were acting suspicious when they noticed the patrol boat and during the search the officers discovered 14 parcels containing a white powder.

"The passengers and the motorist were arrested and after being arraigned before an assistant prosecutor in the Nickerie District remanded to prison”, said Inspector Naarden.

This is the second drug bust along the Corentyne River over the past two weeks.
Last week, three Surinamese nationals were arrested in the Saramacca District with 38 kilogrames cocaine in their possession.

Law enforcement authorities said since the crackdown on drug gangs, drugs are being moved by road and boat into Suriname, which is being used as a transshipment point for entry into Europe.
