Late President Janet Jagan’s vibrancy remembered in Essequibo : –at wreath-laying ceremony to mark fifth death anniversary

THE LATE Janet Jagan, former President of the Republic of Guyana and President of the Progressive Women’s Organisation [WPO], was remembered as “mother of the nation” at a moving wreath-laying ceremony to mark her fifth death anniversary at the Cheddi Jagan Children’s Park at Anna Regina on Friday.Chairman of Region 2, Mr Parmanand Persaud, in an address to scores of party members at the commemorative service, said the late Janet Jagan played an important role in the development of Guyana. The chairman said Janet, who was born on 20th October, 1920 in Chicago, USA, came to Guyana in December of 1943 with Dr, Cheddi Jagan, whom she married and worked alongside to develop the country and free Guyanese from colonialism.

The chairman said Janet was also co-founder of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and founding member of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP). Moreover, she was General Secretary of the party, and served as International Secretary, communicating with political movements and women from around the world.

Mr. Persaud said Mrs Jagan also formed the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) by which she mobilised women across the country and expressed the importance of women in the struggle. He also pointed out that Mrs Jagan did lots of work in the sugar industry, and worked among the youths to bring betterment to the country and its people.

Former Member of Parliament and stalwart of the PPP, Mr Isahack Basir, said Mrs Jagan fought for the development of Guyana, including the Amerindian communities. Mr. Basir, who worked very closely with both Janet and Cheddi Jagan, said Mrs Jagan loved Essequibo, and had a weakness for the county. According to Mr. Basir, Mrs Jagan was not only a national hero, but was an international hero who travelled extensively across the world.

Executive member of the Women’s Progressive Organisation, Mrs Juliet Coonjah, said the late Janet Jagan encouraged women to become more educated so as to educate their children. According to Mrs Coonjah, no other woman before Mrs Jagan had ever championed the cause of women in Guyana. She said Mrs Jagan had formed the WPO on the basis of her vision.

Wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument built in memory of Mrs Janet Jagan by Region 2 Chairman Mr. Parmanand Persaud, Vice Chairaman Mr. Samaroo, PPP Branch Office at Anna Regina, GAWU, Rice Producers Association, the PYO, WPO, and by Lima and Pomona WPO groups.

The programme featured poems and songs on the life and work of the late Mrs Janet Jagan.

I remember Janet as the Commander of the Domestic Terrorist, the People Revolutionary Army in the 1970's.

Objective  - "bun cane" and terrorist East Indians who join the PNC.

Some of those East Indians died a nasty death especially on the sugar belt.

Janet Jagan was a controversial public figure and it is natural for GNI members to have varying attitudes towards her.

I have countless positive memories of my personal interaction with her for 26 years in Guyana and even after I migrated to Canada.

In fact, she sent me a card only three months before she died, one of six pieces of correspondence she sent me in Canada.

Mrs Jagan was never too busy to respond to a correspondent. She made the time, not like some present PPP officials who are too big and busy.

I still have the cutlery set she gave me on my wedding day 28 years ago.

Like all politicians, she wasn't perfect, she made errors which I know of, but this is not the occasion for that.

I think it is good that Guyanese are remembering Janet Jagan 5 years after she died. Overall, her contribution to our political and social development was positive.

You are grossly ignorant on spiritual matters and should avoid making a fool of yourself.

Especially when you try to taint the image of a great Guyanese woman while the Indos in the AFC are busy washing Katty's undergarment and taking orders from their dictator Supreme leader.

Indos in the AFC have been reduced to Dhobis and Followers.

Good question Redux, and I have the answer, but let us leave that for another day.

Enough on the woman, may her soul rest in peace.

Kishan, Janet Jagan really loved her husband. She adored and idolized him. I saw it for myself. In early 1992, I wrote a news report for the Mirror that went something like this: "Dr Jagan scoffed at suggestions that...."

Mrs Jagan told me:"Oh, no. Cheddi is above scoffing."

I changed the report to read: "In response to suggestions that.... Dr Jagan said so and so...."

Indeed, Janet Jagan wanted her husband to be presented in the best possible light. Don't blame her.

yuji, as I remarked, Mrs Jagan was controversial. That's a fact. Being controversial is not bad for someone of her stature. But it means some people will not like her. That's natural. Kishan is only expressing his honest opinion.

She was indeed a very complex person. She can say some very hurtful things (she had some penetrating words that can turn the blood in your veins into ice) but then a few minutes later she would give you her last dollar that she had.

HARE KRISHNA MATING RITUAL REVEALED

It has often been observed that the stricter the religious sect, the more obsessed it is about sexuality. This is most certainly the case with the Hare Krishna devotees. Of the four “regulative principles” whose practice is required of all aspiring and initiated ISKCON followers, the most onerous is the one banning any sexual activity not specifically intended for procreation. Furthermore, according to the direct instructions of the founder of ISKCON, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (“Srila Prabhupada&rdquo, privacy was out of the question as to when the conception might take place: the married couple intending to “try for a child” would have to appear before the congregation in the temple in the morning and announce that they would be doing so that night. If that were not indignity enough, both partners were required to spend the day chanting 64 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra on their japa beads, which means that they would be rapidly mumbling it for a total of 6,912 times. In practice, this is a sort of self-brain washing ritual designed to rid the mind of any anticipation for the act to follow, which, in any case, was supposed to be limited to one fast act during which the couple was supposed to be chanting Hare Krishna anyway. Artificial insemination would have been far more humane.
The evident disgust about sexuality that already permeated a sect that regarded celibacy as the desired state of a true devotee and marriage as a concession to accommodate lust—romantic feelings between spouses was actively discouraged—made the production of new devotees-to-be little more than a necessary evil. By the 1970’s, Srila Prabhupada further stipulated that a “first-class” householder should in fact not live with his wife at all and, instead, should live in the temple as celibates in separate ashrams with the unmarried men and women, respectively. The only time they could have a physical contact was when, if they desired a child, they would go once a month (under the conditions already described) and for a night borrow the apartment of one of the rare couples who were so fallen as to live together. They would then do their business as quickly and dispassionately as possible before showering and returning to their respective ashrams.
The process soon became the butt of jokes and whispers among many devotees because of the sheer ludicrousness of the situation: since you were supposed to think only of Krishna during the brief copulation, couples were sometimes overheard frantically chanting the mantra during the minute or so that the man was supposed to muster an erection to shove into a woman who might as well have been in a coma. If pregnancy did occur as a result of this indignity, the woman was expected to return to the brahmacharini ashram and spend her term sleeping on a sleeping bag on the floor like everybody else, eating the same food (except for an increased milk allowance), and give birth in a municipal hospital with the bills paid by Medicaid or another medical welfare program.

I dispute this statement.

Janet was a political survivor and she want a persona NON GRATA in the USA so she had no choice and if she had left Cheddi, she would of been a persona NON grata in Guyana.

She did what she had to survive, but she took care of her needs.

She and Cheddi had an understanding - the party became their life.
