IN his popular column, My Turn, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo stated that Guyana had bestowed on former American President, Jimmy Carter, the Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH). He has now corrected this by stating that Carter was instead awarded the Order of Excellence (OE).
The reference to the award was made in the column published in the Sunday Chronicle on July 22 last, in which Nagamootoo saluted President Carter whom he said is best remembered by Guyanese for his critical role in the return of electoral democracy.
βAt 92, he is, once again, taking initiatives to strengthen the fabric of Guyanaβs democracy by encouraging dialogue between the government and the parliamentary opposition,β the Prime Minister noted. Prime Minister Nagamootoo is amongst several Guyanese leaders who enjoy a close relationship with Jimmy Carter, who brokered successful talks during 1990 to reform the electoral system, while his Center has observed several elections here, including those in 2015, which were certified as free and fair.
It is believed that he has met more Presidents in Guyana than in any other country, having held talks with the late Cheddi Jagan, Desmond Hoyte and Janet Jagan and, more recently, consulted former Presidents Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar and sitting President, David Granger on matters mainly related to elections and bipartisan dialogue.
