Joint Services condemn Facebook post by APNU+AFC candidate

Following is the full text of a statement issued by the Joint Services at approximately 23:30hrs last night:It was brought to our attention that Mr James Anthony Bond posted on Facebook three hours ago “An example of what occurred today (yesterday) at Whim Police Station…total number of voters 165….number of votes cast 147…..APNU+AFC 140…..PPP 7…”

Brigadier Mark Phillips in his capacity as Chairman of the Joint Services condemns this action in the strongest possible way. “This is distasteful at best and extremely irresponsible behaviour by a former member of Parliament given that there is no way the results of any polling place of today’s Joint Services voting can be known according to GECOM,” he stated.

The Joint Services is therefore calling on the authorities at GECOM to explain to the public whether there exists any possibility for a process they assured the nation would be secret to have been made public.

This development is extremely worrying since Mr Bond, an Attorney and Candidate on the APNU+AFC list, is expected to exercise good judgement in all matters pertaining to the electorate and the electoral process and not seek in any way to incite mayhem among the populace.

The Joint Services wishes to assure the nation that they remain committed to a peaceful electoral process and urge calm during and after the elections are completed.

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Candidate for the APNU+AFC Coalition, James Bond has defended his Facebook posts, which stated that 94% of Disciplinary Forces have voted in favour of the coalition, even though their ballots are yet to be stamped or counted.

His defence follows condemnation from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), who expressed concern at the posts, describing it as distasteful and extremely irresponsible.

However, Bond in a statement to iNews maintained that he has done nothing illegal or unethical since he conducted an “exit poll.”

“The exit poll I published on my Facebook yesterday has generated a storm in a tea cup as all right thinking Guyanese know that it is impossible given the checks and balances at Gecom for anyone to know the number of votes cast for the individual parties at yesterday’s polling of the Disciplined Services. It is impossible also for someone reading my poll to be persuaded to incite mayhem or cause mayhem,” the Attorney – at – Law said in his statement.

He further noted, “In previous electoral cycles the Disciplined Forces has voted for the opposition and this exit poll showed no change in that pattern. It is a known pattern of voting by that section of our society.

“The poll of itself could not be therefore unethical or unlawful or illegal and ought not cause Gecom to even bat an eyelid. It is what obtains in every modern democracy. However if the said poll causes the Disciplined Forces uneasiness I APOLOGIZE to the members of the Disciplined Forces.”

He then went on to chastise the PPP/C for “wrongfully” accusing the Disciplined Forces of many things and starving them of a decent wage and better working conditions.

The PPP/C has since stated that it intends to file an official complaint to GECOM and the police, citing Bond’s posts as an abuse of the election laws.

GECOM says no laws broken by James Bond’s Facebook Posts

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Officials at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) have confirmed that A Partnership For National Unity’s James Bond did not break any of Guyana’s laws when he posted on social media that 94% of the disciplined services voted in favour of the APNU+AFC on Saturday, May 02, although the ballots are yet to be counted.

According to the official, there are no laws in Guyana that prevents someone from making a post on social media about anything regarding the conduct of polls.

This follows a call made by Former President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo for Bond to be charged because of what he perceived to be an infraction on the part of the APNU Member.

Jagdeo at a PPP rally on Sunday May 03, is quoted as saying “It is illegal and we have to charge him now. We have to charge him and send a signal to this country….if we don’t put a stop to it, on Elections Day, there shall be consequences….and so I ask the people who are entrusted by our Constitution and our laws to make sure that our elections are organised properly in this country. That we do not sit and become complacent and view these attempts as isolated and average, but how do we deal with these illegal attempts leading up to the elections to subvert the polls will do a lot with what takes place on Elections Day.”

When contacted by iNews on Monday, May 04 Bond said that Jagdeo should be the last person calling for anyone to be arrested.

The APNU Member has already defended the social media post contending that there was nothing “unethical or unlawful or illegal” about his comments, since he conducted an ‘exit poll.’
