Judge us by our records too Mr. Commissioner

Dear .Editor,

I have been a member of the Guyana Police Force for the past nine years, and as the days go by, I sit with some of my colleagues discussing what next to expect from our top brackets as it relates to our welfare and the salary we receive. The Force laments so much about stopping bribery and corruption, but how can this happen when junior police ranks are receiving a salary of G$48,000 per month?

How can a Police Constable who is married, having a child, paying a monthly house rent of G$18,000, paying a daily transportation cost of G$600per day from “Tuschen E.B.E” for twenty six days per month, and moreso, pay your own transportation to travel to court to give evidence, since the Force does not provide transportation for you to travel from Eve Leary to Providence, survive?

Officers and Inspectors are given ‘Transportation allowance’ monthly. It is rather disappointing for us junior ranks, since we are the frontline of the Force. As it relates to our welfare, whenever junior ranks are injured in the line of duty, whether life-threatening or minor, we are being taken to the GPHC and no one from the Force Admin/Welfare Department visits us. One example is Police Constable Richardson who was hit down while performing roadblock duty nearly two years ago. He is presently living an abnormal life at his home in Linden. Why wasn’t he flown overseas the same way Assistant Commissioner “Vyphuys” was flown overseas? Again, we the junior ranks are at a disadvantage.

At the opening of the Junior Officers Conference for this year, the Home Affairs Minister said that police ranks should live within their means, but I guess he is unaware that we are living below our means. Imagine your salary is so small, that many days you have to be ‘Hitchhikers’ to get to and from work and Court, not forgetting that we have now became shoplifters to sell whatever product we shoplift to raise a passage to go to and from work, all because we like our job and want to protect this nation. Why can’t we be posted in a station district close to our homes? At least this would breakdown our expenses.

Meanwhile, we are not allowed to have any form of business or do other jobs (no even plant a kitchen garden and sell the produce). And last but not least, I would like to commend Commissioner Green on his statement, “Judge me by my records.” I do hope Mr.Green and other officers judge us, the junior ranks, by our records, since in many cases, whenever an allegation is being made against junior ranks, these allegations are not being properly investigated and we are not being dealt with according to the books, but rather authoritative leadership.
