The father of the 23-year-old victim of a horrific gang rape in India has given permission for her name to be revealed for the first time today.

Badri Singh Pandey said he wants 'the world to know' the name of his daughter Jyoti, who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days after the brutal rape in New Delhi.

'I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks,' said Mr Singh Pandey. 'They will find strength from my daughter.'

I am glad she has a name. That is how people live for ever. She will live for me as long as I live for example because I know her name.

Poor girl. The nation should be ashamed, it did not happen in a remote village but in the heart of the capital. The police action after picking them up was also shameful. My experience there, the police are part of the oppression machinery of women. They blame and harass the women who are molested instead of going after the guys. In India one question is first asked by man, women and police, "did she behave in a way to provoke the attack". I heard this over and over in such cases.

She's probably a Sikh. The couple were to be married in February and her parents had made all the preparations in UP. The 6 animals are begging for life now.
