K/News online readership reaches record levels

Online readership for Kaieteur News, Guyana’s largest selling daily newspaper, has been reaching record levels. On February 4, last, it reached 176,078 hits.

Kaieteur News has seen a record number of persons visiting its website in recent times.

It would have been the highest number of hits since November 29, 2011, the day after General Elections, when the website, www.kaieteurnewsonline.com, saw a record 198,289.
The online edition does not charge a fee for readership and is the most popular in Guyana.
More than 228 countries around the world have been visiting the website, which helped to record 186M views since the newspaper started tracking the numbers in 2009.
The largest number of hits is found in the US, with almost 55 million recorded between February 25, 2012 and February 21, 2015.
Guyana followed with 18.7M; Canada 17.9M; United Kingdom 3.9M and Barbados 2.2M. These are countries with a large number of Guyanese immigrants.
Following closely were Trinidad and Tobago with 1.5M; Antigua and Barbuda 1.2M and British Virgin Islands 658,000.
Nearby Suriname, Bahamas, Jamaica and French Guiana where a number of Guyanese also reside, saw over 400,000 hits each for the period starting February 25, 2012.
It would appear that crime stories –accidents, robberies and murders – would account for the biggest draws for readers.
For example, yesterday Kaieteur News reported on the tragic news that six pupils and their teacher drowned along Burma Road following a pre-Mashramani outing.
That article attracted almost 9,400 hits by 19:00hrs yesterday while another story, “Toshao who refused Ramotar’s entry to village, held for rape”, followed with 5,705 views. Another story of two Magistrates being sacked also saw high interest, with 4,200 hits at 19:00hrs.
At that time, just over 115,000 hits were recorded and counting. The figures, according to trends, would see sharp spikes for especially readers from the US, who would normally visit later in the evening, after work.
After the stories, the most popular draw for the newspaper would of course be the satirical, “Dem Boys Seh” column. Readership has been hovering over 4,000 hits daily.
This was followed by “The Freddie Kissoon Column” with an average of 2,000 hits daily.
Between September 2012, when 2.6M hits were recorded, the readership has been increasing steadily, touching 3.5M last month. So far for this month, some 2.5M hits were recorded.
