To answer your question directly, since growing up as a kid we heard people who takes animal lives and preform ritual and mention their enemy names is the intension to harm .. never witness such act .

One Sunday I walked in a Kalimai church and them women were busy playing to the beat of the nagara drums. It seem like fun and harmless. I don't believe in possessive rituals in any religion.

Dave, I have been to a few Kali Mai Puja growing up in Skeldon. I saw grown men get beaten with a cane and neem branch. It's funny that before the puja some men were "ketching jumbie". Just before the Puja started, all the jumbie left these guys(wondered why?). I heard the people sacrificed goats and cooked "water rice". Never saw the sacrifice or heard that anyone got harmed by the Kali Mai Puja.
