Kamala Harris' win Tuesday night will make her the first Indian American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

She will also be just the second black woman to serve in the U.S. Senate, and the first black senator from California.

Harris’ race and ethnicity were never a focal point of the contest, which she was projected to win handily. Many people focused more on the possibility that California might have elected the first Latina to the Senate if Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Orange) had won.

Harris’ mother, Dr. Shyamala Harris, emigrated from India. Her father, Donald Harris, emigrated from Jamaica.

According to the U.S. Senate’s website, just nine black Americans have ever served in the Senate. Democrat Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois became the first black woman to serve in the body in 1993.

A handful of Indian Americans have served in the U.S. House, including California’s Dalip Singh Saund from 1957 to 1963 and current Rep. Ami Bera (D-Elk Grove), who was first elected in 2012.

The Indo KKK will not like this how can a black Jamaican  marry an Indian Lady.

They generally think that Indo Jamaicans are confused and self hating because they consider themselves to be FIRST Jamaicans, and SECOND Jamaicans of Indian descent.

I see Jamaican Indians and blacks mixing freely with each other with none of the tensions that you see among Guyanese.  Touch any Jamaican and they will all come after you. We saw that Jagdeo and many of the Indo KKK would have been quite happy had MadBURRO invaded Guyana. This because the PPP lost.

She may and she has that God given right BUT her upbringing is what got her where she is.

I agree...with a black man and a progressive woman! I met her at school and never even had an inkling she was indian. But at our school Indians never act like you folks do here...not even the guyanese onee. Errol can affirm that.

I met my daughters mother there and she is from Goa and from a traditional family. When she got pregnant they took her to Goa and made sure her kids ( twin girls) were treated well.

She came back and completed medical school and we raised our daughters without emphasizing religion  but letting them choose. They are Catholics like their mom.

No other country in the Caribbean has East Indians felt more hate ( other than Guyana) than Jamaica.  The Koolie is at the bottom of society there as a result of British colonialism, fake black Englishmanism and christianity. It has led to self hate for many.  The same type of self hate and blame of hindu gods that our East Indian ancestors experienced when they were brutally defeated in battle on the plains of India hundreds of years ago.

I am not sure exactly how much Afro she has in her blood.

What is that suppose to mean? I thought you are what you are based on your cultural leanings. This lady calls herself black and she is what she says she is.

Jamaican Indians are fiercely JAMAICAN. You hate this and call them confused and self hating.

Tell you what Indo Jamaicans are way more contented, self assured and happy than are the legions of Indo Guyanese.  The latter,  whose whole being is consumed by hatred of blacks, a longing for India, and a sense of loss because they don't know how to fit into a multi ethnic Guyana, are way more miserable than their Jamaican counterparts.  When you all migrated to North America and saw real Indians you all ran to them, and were shocked when they chased you all away.

You are exhibit one of this. You married a mixed woman, whose kids are mixed identified. She has no interest in this "coolie nation" that you want to build.  You are too terrified of her to suggest that she abandon her creole culture, which is I bet is also your kids' core culture as well.

So you come here and write about a fantasy India in Guyana where you don't have to tremble in terror every time your wife enters the room.

Her mother looks like a black Jamaican woman. I am fairly confident that a Jamaican identity is what she was raised in.
