Kennard’s Memorial Post Emancipation race meeting set for Sunday Winner of Feature race gets $1 million as DDL on board

All Roads lead to the Kennard Memorial Turf Club in Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne on Sunday, September 18 when some of the country’s top horses compete in eight races for attractive prizes and bragging rights from 13:00hrs in what is expected to be a day of fun and frolic for the entire family.

The large, beautiful Trophy for the Feature Event (A & Lower over 7 furlongs with a first prize of $1 Million) was handed over to Honorary President of Kennard Memorial Turf Club, Justice Cecil Kennard by Maria Munroe, DDL’s Brand Manager; Wines & Spirits, at a simple presentation at Kennard’s Office on Brickdam.

Munroe said DDL was delighted to continue their long-standing sponsorship of Sunday’s Event adding that this was the third race meet held by the East Berbice turf club for the year and the local beverage giant has been the main sponsor for all of them.

“The last event by the Horseracing club is scheduled for Boxing Day and once again DDL will be on board in a major way since we are committed to supporting the development of sports in Guyana which unites communities,” said Munroe, a former national hockey player.

She remembered attending a horse racing event earlier this year, and was overwhelmed by what she experienced at Bush Lot Farm.

“The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic! People of all ages enjoyed a day of exciting races and I encourage those in Demerara to grasp the opportunity to take the entire family for an out-of-town trip this Sunday and see for themselves what goes on in Berbice during horse racing at Bush Lot Farm,” Munroe added.

Kennard said that this was the 43rd consecutive year that DDL is the premier sponsor, adding that he was confident that the relationship will continue for many more years to come since sponsorship is very important to keeping the event alive.

“We are thankful for DDL’s support over such a long period of time since horses are very expensive to maintain. We are fully ready for Sunday and 65 horses have already registered …the track is in good condition and we expect a large turn-out as usual,” Justice Kennard disclosed.

The races are being run under the rules of the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club and in the event that there are less than five horses entered for any event the club reserves the right to cancel or reframe the said event.

Owners of horses must pay at least $5,000 for each horse at the time of entry and if this is not done the horses’ names will not appear on the official programme and would not be allowed to run. It was also disclosed that if at least five horses fail to start a race there will be no third prize while seven must be in the race for there to be a fourth prize.

The day starts with the non winners (L class) over five furlongs with a winners’ prize of $120,000 with half of that amount going to the horse that finishes second.
