Kobras grab final qualifying spot for Road to Mecca IV

“Set to be biggest edition” – Nigel Hinds
The 4th edition of Guyana’s national basketball club championship bounces off next week Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). The 10-team tournament had nine clubs that gained automatic qualification to compete for over $2million in cash and prizes and last weekend, four clubs within the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association battled for the final spot.
The four clubs that clashed for the final spot were Kobras, UG Trojans, Pepsi Sonics and Republic Bank Nets; Kobras came out on top after easing past nets 61-55 in the final on Sunday led by a game high 20pts from their skipper Travis Burnett.
The qualifying semi-finals were played on Saturday evening at CASH, Kobras defeated UG and Nets defeated Sonics.
The other nine clubs that will contest Mecca IV are as follows, Bounty Colts, Dyna’s Raven, Ameila’s Ward Jets, Half Mile Bulls, Rose Hall Jammers, Victory Valley Royals, Retrieve Raiders, Pacesetters and Plaisance Guardians.
City club Bounty Colts that have been in exquisite form in GABA will be rearing to go one step further in 2017and usurp reigning champions Retrieve Raiders of Linden, following their runner-up finish in 2016.
Meanwhile, head of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, Nigel Hinds, shared with Kaieteur Sport that this edition of the National Club Championships is set to be the biggest in terms of CASH incentives with the winners pursing at least $1.2million dollars.
Banks DIH through their PowerAde and Coca-Cola brands are the platinum sponsors of this tournament, after pledging $1million in support. (Calvin Chapman)
