Top ranked clubs battle as Jets face Royals, Raiders collide with Bulls

The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) will stage its senior tournament, the LABA/MSC Open championship from tonight starting with a double header, involving the town’s four leading clubs. Linden champions Retrieve Raiders, who are ranked number one are down to face second seed Half Mile Bulls at 20:30hrs in the main event, but the action bounces off at 18:30hrs between third ranked Victory Valley Royals and fourth seed Amelia’s Ward Jets.
After some discussions between the Mackenzie Sports Club and the LABA it was decided that the Club would assist with this promotion, being convinced of the current challenges facing the sport, reported Lawrence Simon, president of LABA.
He said this was a good sign of the interest of the MSC in helping to promote the game by the long standing sports institution for which LABA was extremely grateful.
The immediate thinking Simon said they were to play the matches on Saturdays and Wednesdays but because of the Boyce and Jeffords Athletics Classics set for next Saturday, at MSC, the plan is to play Friday instead.
However, on Wednesday two more games are planned with Block 22 Flames taking on Christianburg Pistons in the first game at 18:30hrs, while at 20:30hrs Victory Valley Royals clash with Bankers Trust Falcons.
President Simon explained that a special offer was given to clubs to sell fifty tickets for which they would earn much needed cash.
Trophies, replicas and medals are on offer for the winners in this championship which also will affect the ratings of clubs. This therefore means a lot to each club and most important will be the Linden Club championship and bragging rights.
