BS, Why didn't Guyanese farmers do the same?  These is alot of space for overseas commercial farmers in Guyana which will likely not compete for local market share.  Most of them will come with an already established market outlet which Guyanese farmers may not have.  There is nothing that will be done will satisfy some of you.  When it's natural resources, you guys complain, now it's commercial farming, another complain.  I'm sure the displaced sugar workers, etc will find it attractive while you complain.

Maybe the PPP government figured out you did not have the financial wherewithal to engage in cattle farming or maybe your business plan was filled with holes and so they declined your request for land.

Lots of Guyanese have applied for land---and then did nothing afterwards---so priority is now being given to foreign investors with capital.

The Malaysian group that was granted 100,000 hectares of land---they will be growing agri produce that will be marketed in the region.

I meant that  Monsanto's products can be disaster for the people. Even the cattle refuse to eat the corn and beans from Monsanto's seeds, it's a GMO product.

In the 1970's Burnham's Feed program failed. Cooperative farming failed , it was a bad structure for Guyana. The hinterland development program failed because of bad structure. I wont even get into implementation. I looked at the agri plans they had for the hinterland and realized these guys no clue about planning and implementation. I suggested they leased land to farmers in upper berbice reverain areas and if they got it under cultivation within 2 years and maintained consistency they would be granted transport/title. But , the govt must be able to provide rental of agri equipment and supplies against harvest and ensure reliable river transport of harvest. Problem with this is some felt such a system would benefit indians more but , I tried to argue that it did not matter , what mattered was diversification and production. I strongly believe in small farming .I dont think many Guyanese are aware how small private cane farmers boosted the sugar industry when the Brits were in control but it did .

And that is the problem with trying to move a Country forward. The Opposition wouls rather sacrifice Progress to look good in the eyes of their Supporters.

Burnham plan was not bad.  The problem was the mostly Indian farming community were existing in virtual slavery while the Afro-dominated ruling class lived like kings.  Indians were a reluctant partner and were reminded on an almost daily basis why they were not equal citizens.  The PNC did their utmost to "box-in" the Indian masses but the era had passed and it was only time before the house of cards collapsed.
