GuySuCo facing closure if no $$ from govt – GAWU

The main sugar Union GAWU says it has learnt that the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuCo) is facing the prospect of closure having exhausted its finances and is  desperately seeking the support of the Government.

In a press release today, GAWU said that in a letter of May 15, 2020 from GuySuCo Chairman, John Dow to President David Granger, Dow appealed for the President’s intervention “…to use your good offices to arrange for funding to prevent the impending closure of the Industry”.  In the letter, GAU said that Dow told President Granger that “….GuySuCo needs funds now to be able to survive after the 2nd week June 2020”. The GAWU, through its representative on the GuySuCo Board, has learnt that the President did not respond to the Corporation’s request, the release said.

For the thousands of Guyanese who directly and indirectly who still depend on the sugar industry for their livelihoods, this is most disturbing news at this time.

Sugar is dead.  Transform these estates into mix businesses.

Not a good idea.    They don't have money to run the sugar estates, where would they get money to run businesses and where would you suddenly come up  with business oriented people .

Bullshit about livelihood. The sugar industry keeps going down and broke. What's the meaning of an industry that can't keep up and need bailouts? if the industry can't keep up? Train the workforce to challenge new adventures and close down the sugar factories entirely or put it up for sale.

Selling it is a better alternative.

Look at these crabs change their tunes even before a declaration of the results.  It is in the PPP manifesto that they will reopen the closed estates.  Look at the people posting here now talking about sugar is dead etc. Hypocrites all.

Aren't you the one that said that closing the sugar estates was racist as it was intended to put Indians out of work?

That fella from Maryland is a big mouth.  He was really quite the spectacle during the elections.  In Burnham's time they would have taken him for a helicopter ride to the Linden highway.

I have no recollection of saying that.   How can it be racist?   It was an economic decision by the government.  They had no money although Moses Promised to give them some but couldn't deliver on his promise.  I would rather think that Moses was vindictive and spiteful.

It would be better if the government sell the Sugar Industry to Private Enterprise.   It isn't viable when handled by the government. Both the PPP and the PNC showed that they are incapable of running it.

Free enterprise is the way to go.
