-Den Amstel cruise past Pouderoyen

Eagles FC out of the Mining Town of Linden and Den Amstel produced impressive performances en route to wins as play in the 2nd Annual Limacol Football Competition, which is being organised by Petra Organisation, continued on Friday night, at National Track & Field Centre, Leonora.
Eagles FC squeezed past Uitvlugt by a 2-1 margin, while Den Amstel made light work of Pouderoyen in a 2-0 triumph in the presence of another admirable turnout.
A power failure that lasted for over 90 minutes initially threatened to dampen proceedings, but the standard of play combined by vocal support for the two host teams cancelled out the earlier disappointment which came one minute before the first half of the opening game between Eagles FC and Uitvlugt ended.
At the time of the stoppage, the fixture was locked at 1-1 after Trayon Bobb, who has returned to his home team Uitvlugt gave them the lead in the 17th minute, hammering his shot into the goal following a cross from the right flank.
Undaunted by the setback, the young Lindeners, made up predominantly of players from the celebrated multiple-times Digicel winners Christianburg /Wismar High School, maintained their composure and knocked the ball fluently around the park and got their reward courtesy of a Kelon Primo 39th minute strike.
He bolted past the inert Uitvlugt defence from a ball that was lobbed into the Uitvlugt goal area and lashed it past the goalkeeper for the equalizer.
In spite of the long delay, Eagles came out in the final period with real purpose, dominating the mid-field and looked threatening on every possession.
Uitvlugt on the other hand seemed to be easily predictable as they looked to find their talisman Bobb on every possession and he was effectively contained by no less than two markers.
Primo, looking as menacing as ever, was a constant torment to the Uitvlugt backline and completed a double after firing a sizzling strike in the 69th minute past the advancing goalkeeper from just inside the box.
The result simply meant that Eagles returned home with the maximum three points, while Uitvlugt got none for their effort.
In the feature encounter, Den Amstel proved too strong Pouderoyen in a battle of teams from the West Side.
In what could best be described as a subpar performance from Pouderoyen, Den Amstel quickly asserted their dominance with some effective buildups, but for poor finishing should have gotten an early lead.
One particular chance came with a player having only the goalkeeper to beat, sprayed his shot wide of the left upright.
A similar situation was created shortly after and the effort went straight at the keeper, who made the save.
However, Gideon Payne busted the stalemate in the 29th minute, sprinting on to a headed ball that went in the opposite direction, before steering it past the advancing goalkeeper.
Andre Hector, one of the culprits of poor finishing earlier in the game, got another chance and this time he buried it with assurance.
It came in the 53rd minute, intercepting an intended pass between two teammates to hit past the pressing goalkeeper.
The win provided Den Amstel with three valuable points, while Pouderoyen would have to wait until their next fixture to see if they could gain points.
Round two of the group stage starts tomorrow with a double header, at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
In the opening fixture at 18:30hrs, Winners Connection out of Linden tackle Northern Rangers in what has been billed as a Linden versus Georgetown showdown and this encounter will be followed by the clash between Guyana Police Force and Camptown.
The event is being played in an initial round-robin format, with the top two finishers advancing to the quarterfinal round.
The winners of each group will collect $100,000, while the respective finishers will take home $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 apiece.
The overall winner will receive $500,000 and a trophy, while the second, third and fourth placed teams get $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Banks DIH Limited under the GT Beer Brand, Trophy Stall and Star Party Rentals are the other entities on board.
