If local gov't. elections in Guyana were last held in 1994 then those elected from the various parties are still in their position of authority and power. It is not a case where the local gov't. is completely controlled by members of the ruling PPP/Civic gov't. It is certainly of concern to anyone that elections have not being held this long, but it is must be made clear that those in the opposition are not locked out the system. Their elected officials are still enjoying overtime in their position as much as the gov't.
The opposition has always been looking for something to scream about. When one issue is resolved or could no longer be exploited to whip up tension it is only natural for something else to fill the vacumn. The gov't has given its reasons why there has been a delay in the holding of local gov't. elections. The opposition recently began to bark about local gov't. elections while bluffing a no confidence vote to force fresh general elections. Why they do this is anyone's guess. The U.S. ambassador has joined the chorus in calling for local elections. It is certainly appropriate for him to do this. It is not a deviation from normal diplomatic for a great democracy to have a say in what's happening in another country's affair. We have our share dictatorial rule from those now in the opposition who are now cheering on the US ambassador in chastising the PPP. It is their prerogative to do so. If they have reformed their ways and won't resort to their dirty habits of the past then it's a blessing for Guyana.
Priya Manickchand, Guyana's acting foreign minister or whatever she is, decided to go a bit head on with a respresentative of a great power by reminding him of the US relationship with a dictatorship in Guyana. Priya may have overstepped her bounds by being too blatant with the Mr. Hardt. We must remember that Mr. Hardt cannot side with the gov't. all the time since it would be interpreted as if the US have abandoned other ethnic groups in favor of one. Hardt is playing a balance act by shouting on the PPP about elections. However, the reality remains that Guyana is in excellent standing with the free world, especially the U.S. All of this noise by the opposition parties is part of their campaign to tarnish the gov't's. Lets allow the opposition enjoy this one.

I dont know if you dont know this. But the PNC lost g/twn in 1994. It is the GGG which "runs" G/twn, and with people who havent stood before the electorate for TWENTY years!
It is also not about the oppoistion. IT IS ABOUT THE RIGHT OF GUYANESE VOTERS TO SELECT WHO THEY WISH. Do G/twn voters wish Hammi Green as mayor. I very mich doubt it.
Quite making excuses for no LGE. This is in blatant disregard of the constitution and is as undemocratic as the PNC's rigging of the elections between 1968 and 1985!

No it isnt. In addition to the USA, Canada and the UK have also spoken out against the lack of LGE.
Accept the fact that Hardt is the mouth piece of the US gov't. What he says reflects their view, whcih is that the PPP is an undemocratic and petty regime which flirts with dictators like those who run Iran, and Maduro of Venezuela, and Fidel Castro. NONE of these are in good standing with the USA. Unlike other countries in CARICOM, even HAITI, Guyana refuses to abide by its constitutional obligations which is to host LGE EVERY FIVE YEARS!
The PPP should follow Kamla. She didnt try block LGE in that nation even though she knew full well that her party woulod lose control of the various municipalities.
But then I blame Guyanese, who have a lot of mouth when Barbados and Trinidad toss them out, or when they try and sneak and get free health care on those islands. But when it comes to Guyana its "we gun mek out....wha we gun do"?
Kamla would NEVER dare do what Ramotar does, whether it is refusing to host constitutionhally due elections, or protecting criminal ministers!
Trinidad has the same ethnic issues and political polarization, and yet they dont behave like Guyana! So we must STOP using our racial problems as an excuse!

Local elections are constitutionally mandated and should occur. Failure to meet a democratic imperative is negletful and anti democratic.
You also do not know for sure how many people there are anti government. Add to that the PPP has removed local councils left and right and implanted IMCs in more than half of the existing councils. Even GT have a crippling implant ( and illegal one) in Sow Sooba.
