I Ganga Persaud do hereby wish to announce my resignation as Minister of Local Government & Regional Development with effect of January 31st 2014.

It was a distinct pleasure for me to have served as a Member of the Cabinet. I am extremely grateful to His Excellency, Mr. Donald Ramotar for the confidence he placed in me and I wish to declare my fullest support to him and his Government. I pledge to do all that I can to support the PPP/C Government in everything that it is doing to bring greater, happiness and comfort to all of us as Guyanese.

I wish to reiterate my full confidence in His Excellency, Mr. Donald Ramotar’s ability to lead our country to greater heights and bring more opportunities for success to all Guyana. His Excellency’s leadership styles are admired by many and I am always amazed at the ease with which he deals with issues, particularly delicate and sensitive issues.

As Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, the Ministry would have made significant achievements during my tenure, some of which are:

  1. Strengthening of our Local Government Department, Centrally and Regionally.
  2. Establishment of a Local Government Department to provide support to the NDCs and Municipalities
  3. Enhance our relationships with communities across Guyana, through our constant Outreach Programmes and visit to villages
  4. Significant movement in the direction of ITC to enhance our communication network.

I am extremely proud that together we, were at most times, worked as a team to achieve all that have made us proud. I wish to thank my colleague Minister the Hon.  Norman Whittaker, PS Colin Croal, PA Chitra Singh, Confidential Secretary Geetanjali Curicca, Chauffeur Vedesh Lall and staff of my Ministry , as well as all in the RDCs, NDCs, Municipalities and CDCs for the support given to me and urged that they continue to work as a team for the good of all Guyanese.

As a member of the leadership of our Party, I wish to re – state my commitment to working with the PPP in enhancing our chances at the next General and Regional Elections so as to reclaim the majority in the Parliament. This is so important for Guyana’s continued Growth and Development since no other political party can assure our country’s development other than the PPP.

My resignation as Minister of local Government and Regional Development is based on personal issues presently engaging my attention as well as some additional responsibilities to which I am committed.

Granger said to the media that Minister Ganga Persaud may replace Rohee at the Ministry of Home Affairs when he was asked who he think would replace him. Granger is baffled that minister Persaud is leaving just before local election.

[www.inewsguyana.com] Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud during an exclusive interview with iNews today, following the announcement of his resignation stated that the decision was not an immediate one.

He revealed that he was thinking about this course of action for several months, and had indicated on more than one occasion, the same to his boss, President Donald Ramotar.

Persaud said “fortunately” the president this morning (Thursday, January 23) accepted his request to step down.

Questioned about the reason for the resignation, Persaud said it has to do with his personal life and the demands therein.

He said there are many things to be done in his personal life, all of which were being put on hold as he fulfills his ministerial duties.

However, when he examined his schedule for the next few years, he decided that he could no longer handle the job as it was preventing his from fulfilling his private and other obligations.

Ganga Persaud assumed the office of local government minister following the 2011 elections. He had previously served as Permanent Secretary at different ministries including education. With regards to the vacancy Persaud’s resignation has created, iNews was informed that Norman Whittaker will be assuming full responsibility of the ministry.

In the meantime, Ganga Persaud will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament. Asked about his future, Persaud said he has several options to ponder, including options from the public and private sectors.

With regards to his role within the People’s Progressive Party, he said that will remain intact throughout this life.

January 31 would be blessed day for Guyana. Ganga  tried this stunt before, only to have his resignation refused. He is one of the most incompetent ministers after Rohee.

I Ganga Persaud do hereby wish to announce my resignation as Minister of Local Government & Regional Development with effect of January 31st 2014.

At least Ganga Persaud can predict what his funeral would be like from the opposition side.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has a clean slate. However, most of the big contracts from his Ministry went to primarily one contractor who is a big PPP/C supporter.

Minister Persaud did a lot of damage - Granger

  • Thursday, 23 January 2014 16:38

Leader of the Opposition David Granger says departing Minister of Local Government Ganga Persaud has done a lot of damage.

He made the comment to the media in response to the minister’s announcement on Thursday that he had resigned from the post with effect from January 31.

I’m quite clueless, I don’t understand his sudden removal.  We know that  the local government elections are in the offing and we know that Minister Rohee has been made General Secretary of the party but I don’t have a clue why Mr. Persaud would go off at this time.

From a political point of view we felt that he had done a lot of damage to the local government system whilst he was the point man in dismantling the neighbourhood democratic councils and installing IMCs, so he has done a lot of damage,” Granger told reporters.

Asked about a likely replacement he suggested the government could replace Persaud with Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee. The opposition parties have had a running feud with Rohee and have refused to support any business appearing in the National Assembly in his name.

Granger added that they were looking ahead to the local elections and hoped that the announcements about them being possible by mid-year would be borne out.
