The Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) has re-scheduled their βLocked and loadedβ boxing card which was slated for April 9 in order to facilitate the first ever Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event in Guyana. The event will now be held on April 23 at the Giftland Mall and according to GBBC President Peter Abdool both amateur and professional fights as well as MMA are on the cards. Speaking at a press conference held yesterday at Giftland Mall, Abdool stated that Mixed Martial Arts has gained tremendous popularity but the sport is yet to come to Guyana so this is an opportunity to stage the sport here whereas Guyanese can witness the MMA first hand. Abdool feels that the staging of MMA here will enhance the careers of local boxers. President of the Trinidad and Tobago MMA Federation Jason Fraser congratulated Giftland Mall for being the main stakeholder of this historic occasion adding that he is happy to be part of the unique event. He related that a female bout is on the card and called on Guyanese for their support. βMMA is here to stay and plans are in the making to stage many more events in Guyana,β he posited. Roy Beepat, Chairman of Giftland Mall, stated that MMA is the next thing in Guyana and he is happy to be part of it. He indicated that entity has endorsed Dexter Marques and is in the process of doing same with Elton Dharry. The Amateur bouts will see Rewinne David facing Akeela Malazon in four rounds (120lbs) and Kellon Isaacs matching gloves with Euel Augustin over three rounds (140lbs). In the professional segment, Anson Green will take on Charwin Estwick (Catchweight), Imran Khan will battle Keeve Allicock (Lightweight), Edmond Declou will challenge Winston Pompey (Super Middleweight) and Dexter Marques facing Luis Alberto Requena of Venezuela in the feature event which is a stepping stone for Marques to have a shot at a world title in the Flyweight category. Admission is $1,000 and $2,000 at ringside.
