Guyana is on the road to losing the Caribbean Championship title without throwing a punch and the winner by knockout would be the perennial lack of sponsorship. Up to yesterday afternoon the Guyana Boxing Association had received seven hundred thousand dollars from the Guyana Olympic Association and a pledge of three hundred thousand from the National Sports Commission.
β€œOne week ago we needed three and one half million dollars. That has moved to around four million dollars now as ticket prices go up each day. We are now in real danger of losing the title outside of the ring,” Guyana Boxing Association president Steve Ninvalle said yesterday.
The Caribbean Championships is scheduled to be held in St Lucia from December 13th to 16th. Following the conclusion of the Terrence Alli National Open the GBA selected a team of 13 boxers, three coaches and two referee/judges to participate in the third episode of the championship.
Guyana was crowned Champion Country when the first Caribbean Development tournament was held here in 2015. Last year the team Guyana scraped into the tournament held in Barbados after Ninvalle staged a hundred mile walk from Corentyne to Georgetown in order to raise funds.
The team of 11 boxers returned home with ten gold medals, one silver and the Champion title. This year the organizers have changed the name to the Caribbean Championships and 17 countries are scheduled to take part.
β€œWe are still optimistic that the full team will get a chance to once again be good ambassadors and make Guyana proud,” Ninvalle added.
