Dead: 73-year-old Deonarine called “Russian”
Lover confesses to killing Pomeroon farmer who wanted more intimacy
The 47-year-old lover of 73-year-old Deonarine also called “Russian”, who was found dead with a single gunshot wound to his abdomen has reportedly confessed to the crime on Tuesday.
The woman, who was once the house servant of the now dead man, made the confession during interrogation by members of the Major Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The woman reportedly told detectives that on the night of the murder, the now dead man picked her up from her home at Charity Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast and they went to his house. While there, she made dinner and couple ate.
After that, this publication was told the couple retired to bed.
However, an argument subsequently broke out between the couple.
The argument escalated and at this time, the woman related that the farmer reportedly armed himself with a knife and allegedly threatened to kill her if she did not comply with his request for more intimacy.
This reportedly led to a scuffle between them, resulting in the woman being injured as she attempted to take away the weapon.
The knife, she told detectives fell to the floor and in retaliation, the elderly man allegedly ran to the lower flat of the house where he collected the weapon from a secured safe and returned.
She said she attempted to take away the gun but it went off, fatally wounding “Russian” in the process.
After the incident, she reportedly got rid of the weapon and raised an alarm claiming that the elderly man was shot during a robbery.
The man was picked up and taken to the Charity Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Initially, the woman and three of the now dead man’s employees were arrested. During the preliminary investigation, the now confessed lover told the police that while they were having dinner someone rapped at the door and now dead man went to inquire.
Upon doing so, said narrated that the man was attacked by a masked man armed with a firearm. She had claimed that she intervened and held onto the weapon but instead of letting go, the man whipped out a knife and she held onto that too.
During the commotion, she claimed that Deonarine ran into the lower flat of the house while the armed man overpowered her and went in pursuit of the farmer.
After being interrogated, however, the woman claimed that she made up the story after she realized that the farmer was dead.
When contacted, ‘G’ Division (Essequibo Coast And Islands) commander, Superintendent Khali Pareshram confirmed that the woman confessed to the murder while noting that four men remain in police custody as they continue their investigations. (Bhisham Mohamed)
