He said it is completely absurd to believe Islam  can exist apart from the west to which it owes a debt for  its core beliefs and with which it shares a common thread as to the validity of much of what it believes  historically.

Such men as him is rare in Islam and the unfortunate thing is he is the only person I ever heard of from within the Islamic academia ever articulating a need for a reformation. Instead the predominant movement in the culture is an  absurd regression into some hitherto fictive era of Islam which pervades modern fundamentalism.

I thought only an American can run for the Presidency. I would want to believe a practicing muslim will not be elected to that office. The electorate will judge such a candidate. As powerful as the Jews are in the USA, they are yet to have one their own at the white house. I remember, the time of JFK, it was a big event to have a Roman Catholic elected, religious prejudices were the concerns of the day. At least, those were the sentiments of JFK's father.
