A family from Mahaica is pleading with the public to offer assistance to their five-year-old daughter who has been diagnosed with a cyst on her brain.
According to Denise Gravesande of Mahaica, her five-year-old daughter, Jada, was diagnosed in August with a cyst on the brain.
Prior to the diagnosis the child had been complaining about severe headaches, fever and mild vomiting. The childβs mother said that after several visits to the hospital a doctor at the Georgetown Public Hospital recommended that an MRI scan be done.
On August 3, last, Jadaβs parents were given some horrifying news. It was found that the child had a growing cyst in her brain. They were told that the child would need surgery overseas to correct her condition.
The child who was attending the Mahaica Nursery School has been in and out of the hospital ever since the diagnosis. Doctors were forced to place a shunt in her head to help reduce the buildup of fluid in her brain.
A ventricular shunt is a tube that is surgically placed in one of the fluid-filled chambers inside the brain ventricles.
Little Jada has been in the care of the Georgetown Public Hospital for the past few weeks while her parents are trying to raise funds for her life-saving surgery which can be done in Trinidad.
According to the childβs mother a hospital from Trinidad has sent an invoice stating that the cost for the surgery and immediate follow up treatment will be some US$20,000.
However that cost still does not cover travel expense for little Jada. Hence her family is pleading with members of the public to come forward and assist in whatever way possible.
According to the childβs mother, Jada is now bedridden and is non-responsive. This publication was told that the family has since approached the Ministry of Health for assistance and was given all assurance they will be given some monetary help.
Meanwhile if persons are interested in giving little Jada a second chance at life they can contact the parents on telephone numbers 228-2834, 614-5176 or 602-7788.
