Mahdia residents protest deplorable roads; govt says strong roads will be costly

  • Residents of Mahdia blocking the airstrip road
  • Residents in Mahdia on Monday marched and blocked a main road to protest the poor condition of the roads and unsatisfactory potable water supply.

However, a senior Public Works Ministry official says it only has GUY$30 million in the kitty and that money cannot build a strong asphalt road that will withstand heavy duty vehicles. Instead, and official said that money can barely fund laterite roads that are also weak and cannot stand up to rainy weather.

A Public Works Ministry official plans to visit Mahdia to conduct an assessment before deciding how the GUY$30 million would be spent on laterite work in sections totaling three miles.
  • If authorities were to build strong long-lasting asphalt roads in Mahdia, the official said it would cost at least GUY$120 million per mile of road. There are about six miles of internal roads in that mining township.

Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn recalled that several years ago, an asphalt road failed shortly after it was constructed. “Some years ago, we had actually gone and asphalted the road…That road perished because of too much weight on the road,” Benn told Demerara Waves Online News.

Tired that none of the money earned from gold being produced in Region 8 is being reinvested in improving roads and water, an estimated 100 residents marched to the Regional Administration headquarters.
  • They then set up barriers on the airstrip road, preventing the movement of vehicles along that main artery through the gold mining township. “They said that they are not going to move until their demands are met,” Region Eight Chairman, Mark Crawford told Demerara Waves Online News.

He said gold miners have decided to stop selling the precious yellow metal to the Guyana Gold Board to protest the failure of government to fix the roads and potable water system.
  • He said gold miners have decided to stop selling the precious yellow metal to the Guyana Gold Board to protest the failure of government to fix the roads and potable water system.

He said the inner Mahdia roads have not been repaired for more than one year now and he had requested GUY$40 million in the 2014 National Budget for roads but none was allocated by the Ministry of Finance. “The roads are in a deplorable state. This is the worst it ever was and there is no help from the Regional Administration,” said Crawford.

Crawford accused central government of discriminating against the Potaro-Siparuni administrative region because it is being controlled by the Alliance For Change (AFC). Concerned residents carried placards that read “We need better roads, water and 24 hour electricity,” “We need better education and road and better health,”  and “No water, no gold to Gold Board.”

This is the type of PPP massive fraud. Why is it that their Contractor friends are not required to build roads for the specific type of traffic such as heavy loaded trucks in this mining area?

Guyanese from all walks of life deserve a better standard of living, safer streets and neighborhoods. Little by little, people from across the country are exhibiting their democratic rights to voice their concern to the government. If God cannot solve all our problem at one time, Government wouldn't be able to do it either.

The PPP might consider the AFC small, but look at the shittings they give the PPP.

Take a close look at the picture again. It is Moses and the AFC that is getting the shittings after Moses ends up hiding in toilet after the threat of a no confidence vote.

That separates the Big men from the small boys. Moses and the AFC are the Bluffmaster party, only for the foolish.

Very good!  Now Bartica, then Berbice got to protest against CRIME.

So the PPP put aside $14 billion to build the road from New Amsterdam to Mara but they do not have even $1 billion for the people of Mahdia?  Is not cows, goat and sheep living in Mahdia.

Come out people and block the road.

This PPP only looking after those whom they think they shall get votes from.

Guyana roads are travel by people, animals and heavy duty machinery. You always likely to find pot holes. Let's take a visit to some rich areas in G/T, and most of the streets are full of bushes and pot holes.

KAIETEUR NEWS, AUGUST 5 ---“We have had enough! It is time President (Donald) Ramotar do something for the people who put him in that position.”
This is the view of one of more than 100 demonstrators who staged a protest in Mahdia, Region eight yesterday, calling on the Government to repair their roads and address the electricity situation.

The protestors yesterday

Protesters[background]. Dog named Revyujee[foreground]

The protestors, most of whom are gold miners, have threatened to withhold their royalties if the government does not act immediately.
“It doesn’t make sense we pay royalties and the government is not treating us right. If they are not going to fix this road and rectify our electricity situation then we will not sell our gold to the Gold Board,” said Raymond Charles, a gold miner.
Among those present at the protest and armed with placards were taxi drivers, gold miners and the Regional Chairman, Mark Crawford.
The demonstrators blocked the main road, leading from the airstrip into the community with planks, preventing vehicles from entering and leaving the village. According to Crawford, the protest will be an “ongoing something” to get the government to place some focus on the mining town.

“We are contributing significantly to the economy and it is unfair for the Government to treat us like this…they give us electricity when they feel like and this is a total eye-pass,” an angry Crawford said.
“The taxes that we paying, where is the money going? It is only fair that they put back into our community because we are doing the right thing and we want to see Mahdia developed.”
Crawford said that the gold miners have vowed to challenge the Government with paying their taxes.
“We have almost 1,000 miners and if the government wants to charge the miners for not paying tax then they should start making accommodations for all of them,” the Chairman posited.
According to one protestor, Dennis Boat, the bridges in Mahdia are “suicide traps which can collapse anytime. You would take 45 minutes to transverse a road in Mahdia instead of 10 minutes.”
The protestors have vowed to continue demonstration today.

Gil

You are the one who started the name calling. Please do not run to admin when I start dishing it out back to you.

Where did he start the name calling?

Ignore him. He is a shameless liar like Hitler's Goebbels.

He called Moses and Gerhard "neemakaram" and he called Ramjattan "cockeye" and he has the gumption to say Gil "started the name calling."

Gil

You are sounding senile, do not get into the gutter like Mitwah does. Take a step back and reflect on your unique style and mannerisms.

Do not get carried away with politics, the cockeye and neemakharam have no political future. Do not waste your time with the AFC since they are doomed.

yuji, thanks but no thanks. In your post here I've highlighted two of your words.

In your prolific posts there's a proliferation of similar epithets, like Dunce for Danyael/Stormborn and antiman jalili for Jalil.

Why do you dare to presume I need advice from someone like you?

How dare you tell me not to "waste" time with the AFC?

Inasmuch as I criticize the PPP here, I don't tell you not to waste time with the most corrupt political party in Guyana's recorded history.

You are presumptious. Fie!!

Mr Gilbakka Mr Jalil use same term 1000 time

My dear, Jalil is not presumptious to tell me what party or friend to choose. Besides, Jalil and you are good friends, notwithstanding what appears on the BB.

Me think he know yuh mamoo. smh

Jalil used to roam all over GT in bygone years. Man about town, as they say.

Seriously, JB. Despite the persona these guys portray and project on this BB, Jalil and Mitwah are good guys.

In terms of integrity and principles, away from GNI you will meet two different persons, in stark contrast to what you see here.

I blame some posters here for bringing out the worst in them.

Jalil and Mitwah are passionate about social justice and good governance.
