Manickchand: Leaders have a duty to defend Guyana’s sovereignty

playing nice is not an option in face of ‘gross interference’

EDUCATION Minister Priya Manickchand yesterday, in the National Assembly, defended the stance she took against former United States Ambassador Brent Hardt for his “frequent” and “repeated” utterances that went against diplomatic protocol.

And she made it clear that leaders of Guyana have a duty to defend Guyana’s sovereignty, and do not enjoy the luxury of saying yes to the dangerous interference simply to avoid trouble or to please someone, including another country.

“A ‘No’ uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a ‘Yes’, merely uttered to please; or worse, to avoid trouble,” Manickchand said, in reference to a quotation made popular by Mahatma Gandhi.

I agree with Priya but there are two sides to a coin, what she have to realize is her party PPP is stalling democracy and the opposition leaders have no choice, they have to depend on foreign forces to keep up pressure..

The opposition don't need foreign intervention to keep up the pressure. By international standard, no foreign ambassador is supposed to get involved in a country's internal affairs. When was the opposition ever afraid of speaking up? They are also Guyanese and should stand in solidarity and defend Guyana together. Burnham would never done a thing like that. God bless his soul.

Loud booing and heckling erupted in the National Assembly this afternoon (Thursday, July 10), when Education Minister Priya Manickchand stood in the House to defend the speech she delivered one week ago which has been widely deemed as an assault of United States Ambassador to Guyana, Brent Hardt.

Opposition Parliamentarians booed and shouted “shame” almost drowning out the Minister.

Burnham days that is a different era,i lived thru those years he had the nation in check, don't forget foreign intervention helped the PPP to get in

power and as i mentioned they should stop stalling democracy and abide with the constitution,it appears they are afraid of losing support, hold the

LGE it will be better for the people.

Guyana's sovereignty is not helped by denying Guyanese the right to hold Local Elections. Claiming ambassadorial over step because he reminded ud we have this right is not about sovereignty.

The PPP is demanding international cover by insisting it is their business to screw us to thy kingdom come and no one  has a right to help us.

Note, if we cannot get our democratic rights addressed at home we will ask for help abroad. By the way....we already did that. It is why the PPP is in office. America forced Hoytes hand!

Correct, CBJ big-mouth DNA still embedded in the PPP.  What caused the US Ambassador to speak out?  She needs to contemplate that.

They are clowns.  Guyana is a mosquito jumping on an elephant back and got swatted.  I cannot believe the stupidity in these people.
