Earthquake claims 87 lives, injures 600

At least 87 people have been killed and 600 others injured in magnitude 6.4 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that rocked Iran's northwestern provinces.


On Saturday, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the city of Ahar, near East Azerbaijan's provincial capital Tabriz at 15:53 local time.

The IRIB reported that 30 people were killed in Ahar, 40 in Varzaqan and 10 in Haris. Seven people lost their lives while being transferred to hospital in Tabriz.

According to reports, six villages have been completely destroyed in the incident.

Deputy Head of Iran's National Disaster Management Organization Morteza Akbarpour noted earlier that 11 aftershocks with different magnitudes have hit the northwestern part of the country.

Meanwhile, head of the Rescue and Relief Organization of Iran's Red Crescent Society (IRCS), Mahmoud Mozaffar, said 66 rescuers have been dispatched to the disaster area.

β€œAhar, Varzaqan, Mehraban and Haris districts have been damaged in the earthquake,” Mozaffar added.
